Our cottage's architecture is known as a "story-and-a-half vernacular". It has two levels with two bedrooms in what was once a single upper open loft/sleeping area. We recently split the sleeping area into 2 private bedrooms with a new wall and door and additional A/C unit. The ceiling on this level follows the slope of the roof, common in German Village cottages. The main living area sofa can be converted into a full size bed too (bedding in inner compartment). The sleeping arrangements can accommodate 6, plus the bonus of a pack-n-play for a young child/infant. A full laundry is on the lower level in the historic basement; basic detergent/dryer sheets provided. Watch your head and step down the old cement stairs (used to be on the exterior - the old "storm" cellar)! If dark, please touch the Schlage logo on the electronic lock to light the keypad! Did you forget something? Just ask your host! Otherwise, you will be given privacy. German Village is a historic neighborhood just south of downtown Columbus, OH. Initially platted in 1814 in Columbus' South End, German Village was generally developed between years 1840 and 1914. It was settled largely by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. German descendants at one time comprised as much as one-third of the population of Columbus. Restoration began in 1959 and the Historic District was established in 1963. German Village was the FIRST historic district in the U.S. and it remains a model for all that came after. In the year 1974, German Village joined the Historic Register. Today, more than 1,600 preservations have been completed. Purdy Haus dates to at least the year 1910 when it was occupied by a woodworker/barber George C. McMillin. Nearby homes date between years 1884 and 1888, so it may be older. Walk everywhere - sidewalks are wide - people are warm - parks and restaurants are plentiful! And German Village is central to everything in Columbus. Walk everywhere in German Village! CO-GO and Lime bikes are available for rent (seasonal). Need a scooter - there is always one or more nearby! We suggest Lyft or Uber for airport transportation and for longer commutes. An easy bus ride gets you downtown (COTA), to the Short North or to OSU! And the CBUS (downtown COTA bus loop) is FREE and nearby! Welcome to the historic German Village neighborhood and this historic property! This is a historic property with its historic idiosyncrasies, especially its story-and-a-half vernacular architecture and exposed brick walls but also its steep, narrow staircase characteristic of the 1880s. The old storm cellar access has been enclosed but those stairs are the original cement. Baby gates are available. Distances to: Nationwide Children's Hospital: 1.1 miles - Driving 6 min. - Walking 23 min. Downtown: 1.5 miles - Driving 9 min. - Walking 41 min. Greater Columbus Convention Center: 2.1 miles - Driving 10 min. - Walking 45 min. Short North: 2.8 miles - Driving 12 min. - Walking 59 min. Ohio Stadium: 4.7 miles - Driving 13 min. - Walking 95 min.
