Off the Grid Privacy - Well Appointed Green Rental on Sebec's "Big Lake"
Our camp is road accessible, but very remote. It is the second to last camp on the undeveloped north shore of the "Big Lake." We are "off the grid" and generate our own power via solar panels, storage batteries and back up generator. The privacy, expansive views across the widest part of the lake, beautiful sunsets and brilliant stars are the reasons we chose such a remote location. The massive windows in the great room allow you to enjoy the lake vistas even while indoors. The camp has a master suite with a queen-sized bed looking out over the lake, a single bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a double bedroom with two full beds, and bunks for six children in the finished basement. The basement also has a pool table, a ping-pong table, and a large movie screen for evening entertainment. The open floor plan, easy traffic flow, and bathrooms at each floor level lend themselves to entertaining a large group comfortably. The off-grid solar system is state of the art, and you would never know you are off the grid. The camp has a bathroom and shower on each floor, propane and wood heat, a dishwasher, washer and dryer, and ceiling fans in the great room and master suite. The kitchen is modern, thoughtfully designed, and well equipped - soapstone counter tops, over-sized island between working area and living space, gas oven and range. There is a stone path to the lakeside deck and deep-water dock. There is a secure mooring, but it can get rough out there on such a large expanse of lake and precautions are necessary on occasion. Our family and friends use the camp as much as we can, hence it is not typically available for rent. We rent at reasonable rates because it pains us to see such a beautiful place go unused. Activities: Boating - the lake is 13 miles long and 4 miles wide. Hazards beyond 200' of shoreline are clearly marked by the state. Popular trips include kayaking along the undeveloped north shore, viewing the sunset from the narrows, going to Earley's Falls where the cool waters of Wilson Stream pour into the lake, going to the outlet of the lake to jump off the bridge, going to the Peaks-Kenney beach in South Cove, or just going over to Greeley's Landing for ice cream. Fishing- Native salmon, lake trout and smallmouth bass are very plentiful in Sebec. Several remote ponds in Bowerbank accessible only by logging roads and ATV trails offer good native WILD and HERITAGE brook trout fishing: Grapevine ponds, Bear, Mill, Hurd, Buttermilk ponds, Mud, Duck... the list of ponds that support native brookies goes on and on. The East Outlet of Moosehead Lake (1.25 hrs) and the West Branch of the Penobscot (2hrs) both offer excellent opportunities to fly fish for wild LL Salmon and brook trout in a wild and scenic river setting from shore or from drift boat. Hiking - There are numerous mountains, waterfalls and pristine, gin-clear swimming holes in the area to visit. Piopular destinations include: The Nature Conservancy at Borestone Mountain, Onawa Trestle (Maine's highest railroad trestle), Barren Mountain, White-Cap Mountain, Mount Kineo, KI-Jo-Mary Recreation Area , Gulf-Hagas, Hay Brook Falls, High Bridge Falls. While Hiking in the KI-Jo-Mary area, stop in for dinner at AMC's Chairback or Lyman camps. ATV - Several ATV trail systems maintained by local ski-mobile clubs interconnect to form a seemingly endless network of trails. You can ride your ATV right from our camp to the trailhead just 2miles away. GPS is highly necessary - it's big country out there. Golf - Dover Foxcroft golf course is fairly close by, VERY reasonably priced, VERY kid-friendly, and fairly well maintained. For a full day golf adventure, take ferry from Greeneville to play the historic Mt. Kineo Hotel course. Day Trips - Greeneville on Moosehead Lake (appx. 1.25 hrs), Baxter Park and Maine Woods and Waters (appx. 1.25 hrs), Acadia Park (appx. 2 hrs), Whitewater Rafting on West Branch Penobscot (appx. 1.25 hrs to staging area) Around Camp - swim, fish, boat, kayak, canoe, pick berries, view the incredibly brilliant stars, nap in the hammock, read a book, enjoy a campfire by the lake, disconnect from wifi and reconnect with loved ones. High speed wifi is available.
