The single room has the facility for an additional pull-out single bed for occasional use (£50 per stay including linen & towels )only by advance agreement with the Host - this does make the room restricted in space, and means the door can’t close). Campden is notable for its elegant terraced high street, dating back to the 14th century. This is an ideal base from which to explore other neighbouring villages including Broadway (15 mins by car), Moreton-in-Marsh (20 mins) and Bourton-on-the-Water (30 mins). Upper and Lower Slaughter villages (30 mins) are quintessentially British with lovely walks and beautiful hotels for a bite to eat. Stow-on-the-Wold (25 mins), is home to ‘The Tolkien Door'; hidden away on the grounds of the historic St Edwards Church is a mystical doorway that looks like a portal that could transport you to another realm. With its studded wooden panels flanked by ancient yew trees and an old oil lamp hanging above, you would be forgiven for mistaking this door for being something born of middle earth. There is a local legend that says J.R.R Tolkien visited this church and the entrance inspired his Doors of Durin in Lord of the Rings. Hidcote Gardens is a short drive (5-10 minutes), or a very pleasant cross-country walk (approximately 1 hour) from the cottage - This National Trust Garden is an Arts & Crafts masterpiece. Laid out by the revered American horticulturist, Major Lawrence Johnston, whose grave you can find in the church in Mickleton, Hidcote offers intricately designed outdoor ‘rooms’ bringing endless inspiration for the keen gardener. Close to Hidcote is Kiftsgate Court Gardens, famed for its grounds that were the creation of three generations of female gardeners. Super tea rooms and a sculpture exhibition in August are well worth a visit. A mile further on, a walk around the Foxcote estate is well worth the trip, as are the villages of Ilminton and Ebrington with award winning pubs to quench your thirst.
