The “Venice of the North”, Brugges is a magnificent medieval city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a major port from the 12th to 15th century (when the sealine receded, taking the city’s economic activity along with it). A visit to Brugges is like stepping back in time to the 15th century. If the weather is nice, it's an amazing day trip, with canal rides, cathedrals and museums (major works by Memling, Bosch, Michelangelo), the Beginhof (Beguinage) nunnery, etc. It's also close to the coastal town of Knokke Le Zoute (Belgium’s St Tropez) and the bird reserve in the dunes and marshlands of Le Zwin. Ghent - This medieval city continued to develop but it also has magnificent canals and architecture, a fantastic medieval castle that you can visit, and is a great city just to walk through and enjoy some of the local cuisine (I can recommend Waterzooi, a chicken or fish dish somewhere between a soup and a stew, and quite delicious). Brussels Grand Place is another absolute must. That whole area is fun, notably the Rue de Boucher, with the famous Toone marionette theatre, and the Galeries du Roi et de la Reine, a beautiful glass-covered shopping mall from the Victorian era, with excellent boutiques and book shops. Mid-way between Lille and Brussels is Paira Daiza, a huge zoo and aquarium in a magnificent park. I went there 20 years ago when it was just a small local project, but it's now become a massive attraction with rides and fantastic wildlife and sea creatures. (I haven't seen the new park, but apparently it's really fun). Cap Blanc-Nez - On the French coast, there's a lot of big and little coastal towns near the cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez, which is set up for trekking on top of the cliffs. On a clear day you can see Dover. Nearby: Within a few miles of our place, you have "La Piscine" in Roubaix (an old thermal bath house that has been turned into an art museum) and in Lille you have the Grand Place and Vieux Lille, the old section of the city, which has great boutiques and restaurants and other fun stuff. There’s also the park around the “Citadel”, a star-shaped Vauban military fortress from the Napoleonic area (the fort is used by NATO, so tourists are not allowed in, but the park surrounding it follows the Deule River and is great for walks (plus there’s a small zoo, and usually a traveling circus). Just one hour from Paris. The TGV station of Tourcoing is a quick walk from the loft, and with the new low-cost Ouigo TGV services, Paris is now a quick and highly affordable day-trip. I used to work in the 16eme, and I'd arrive at the office faster than many of my colleagues who lived on the outskirts of Paris.
