Aspasia's courtyard, Lakkoi, Chania, Crete

A quiet 60sqm house in the village of Lakkes, at an altitude of 500 meters, with a traditional atmosphere, with unobstructed views of the White Mountains of Crete, with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room with a kitchen, accommodating 4 people and their pet. The sunrise hits the yard and the windows of the house in the morning and bathes it in light. 20 minutes from the Samaria gorge, 30 minutes from Chania and 60 minutes to Sougia in the Libyan Sea and 10 minutes from the nearest supermarket. The space Our love for the tradition and beauty that all old houses and objects contain, but mainly our connection with this beautiful mountain village, prompted us to start the restoration of our family home in Lakkoi: the house of Aspasia. Here in Aspasia's yard, the whole family, her children and grandchildren, would gather and Mrs. Aspasia would spend many hours cooking, doing chores and knitting. Lakkoi is a historic, old village located 25km south of Chania at the foot of the White Mountains at an altitude of about 500 meters. It was photographed by many photographers (including Fred Boissonas and Nelly) in the early 20th century) as it was famous for the great participation of the inhabitants in the liberation struggles of Crete and Greece. The architecture is simple, poor, austere and utilitarian with an emphasis on functionality. The houses served the needs of the inhabitants who were farmers, stockbreeders and also famous warriors in the struggles for the independence of the island and the union with Greece. We opened the old chests of the house with the dowry of our mother and grandmother Aspasia. Embroidery, carpets, knitted blankets, plates, glasses, etc. We opened the cabinets, repaired them one by one and gave life to all the old furniture of Grandma Aspasia's house. We made lamps from old glasses, seats and beds from old wood and iron. Our love gave life to this house and with modest pride we present it to you. Every object, every corner of the house is full of happy memories and the love we put in to bring it back to life. Aspasia's Courtyard, after years of loneliness, is once again filled with happy people. You!!! The mornings in the village are bright, shiny and there is always a pleasant breeze. Around the village there are countless trails where you can enjoy nature among winding ravines and hidden forests. The Botanical Park, 5 minutes by car, has a good restaurant where you can try traditional Cretan dishes. You can also visit local wineries and enjoy Cretan wines (the closest is the Manousakis Winery). You can visit an olive oil mill where you will taste various oils from the area (such as Biolea Kolymbari 1 hour drive from Lakkes). The village has no supermarket, the nearest one is 10 km away, but we have three family restaurants with simple, traditional food with locally produced ingredients and an old coffee shop where neighbors meet to talk or play cards. At a distance of 15 km is Omalos and the National Park of Samaria, where the largest gorge in Europe is located. The trail starts at 1200 meters above sea level and ends at the beach of Agia Roumeli in the south of the island. The authentic jewel of the village is the chapel of Agios Georgios Methystis, built in the 16th century, with a colorful altar and many remarkable hagiographies. Guest access Guests arrive at the village square and leave their car there. 50 meters from the village square, in a narrow alley with a few steps with a gentle slope, is our house. It has a large yard that you can use in its entirety. We live in the house right above you and are ready to help you with anything you need. Our workshop is in the yard.
