Description
Surrounded by the memory of history, a place to stay in quiet reflection JuJu-An is a small private whole-house accommodation created by renovating a former storehouse, located on the grounds where the Choshu Domain’s han school, Meirinkan, once stood. This site is where Yoshida Shōin spent his youth, teaching as a mentor and passing many years here before becoming independent. Today, only a stone monument remains, and the area is known as Ko-Meirinkan. The space The name JuJu-An comes from Jūjū-tei, the house where Yoshida Shōin was born and spent the first 19 years of his life. As you step onto the quiet grounds, you will notice a dignified stillness— an atmosphere gently separated from the bustle of the castle town. JuJu-An is a private rental designed for a maximum of four guests, intentionally limited to preserve a sense of calm and spaciousness. Two beds are provided, and for groups of three or more, traditional futons are prepared. Guests traveling with young children who prefer futons are welcome to contact us in advance. Bath & Facilities The house has one toilet, separate from the bathing area. The bathroom features a soaking tub made of hinoki cypress, allowing you to relax while surrounded by its natural fragrance. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and other basic amenities are provided free of charge. A small kitchen with an IH cooktop is available for simple cooking. If you have any questions about the facilities, please feel free to ask. Location & How to Spend Your Time The property is located in the Horiuchi district, which is designated as a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Stone walls, narrow winding streets, and traces of the old castle town remain to this day. Enjoy quiet walks, reading, or peaceful conversations while taking in the changing expressions of the garden throughout the seasons. Guest access Please enter through the gate of Ko-Meirinkan and follow the path. You will see the gate to JuJu-An on your left. After passing through it, continue further inside to reach the accommodation. JuJu-An is a private whole-house stay created by renovating a former storehouse. During your stay, this building will be exclusively yours. There is also a main house on the property; however, it is not part of the guest accommodation. For this reason, we kindly ask guests not to enter the main house during their stay. Other things to note Tatami mats are sensitive to moisture. We kindly ask that wet towels or drinks not be placed directly on them. We appreciate your careful use of the furnishings and amenities. In the event of any damage, additional charges may be discussed depending on the situation. To ensure a peaceful environment for our neighbors, please keep noise levels low after 8:00 PM. For the comfort and safety of all guests, smoking and open flames are not permitted on the property at any time. Registration Details Hotels and Inns Business Act | 萩市 | 萩環衛旅第5-9号
