While visiting us here in tropical Florida, you may run across some of our native insects and reptiles. Below is a list and some facts. DO NOT BE ALARMED - you may run into some of our natural habitat's creatures. This is part of Florida living. Palmetto Bug aka Roach Very common in our climate and are primarily attracted to food, water, and shelter. They are especially drawn to crumbs, food scraps, and pet food. No matter how good our pest control, one or two can always sneak through. Do not leave any food particles out and closet drains when not in use. Sugar Ants They are a small dark ant attracted to sugary substances. They tend to be seasonal, often showing up during our hot and dry weather. They are typically seen in kitchens and areas with food. Be careful what you leave out on the counter or where you eat, they will be attracted. Mosquitoes We have a significant mosquito problem due to our warm and humid climate which allows mosquitoes to thrive year-round. Be very careful to keep your doors and windows shut. No-See-Ums If you have ever been bitten by a mysterious insect that seems invisible to the naked eye, chances are you have encountered Florida’s no-see-ums. These tiny pests are often out early morning and early evening, you never see them but you will feel their bite. Iguanas They are green, sometimes orange/brown and vary in size . They are fast moving, non-threatening reptiles that can swim. They will leave droppings. Any contact with or ingestion of iguana feces can lead to gastrointestinal issues and other health problems with your dog/pets. Be aware. Be careful. Always keep an eye out. Any easy way to clear off droppings is to hose them away into the yard. Cane Toads They are large brown frogs with dry warty skin. They secrete a milky poison that can be very harmful if ingested by your dog/pets. This can lead to gastrointestinal issues and other health problems with your dog/pets. Be aware. Be careful.
