Summer chamber music at the Stoeckel Estate.🍁🚴🧊 The space THE HOUSE A Victorian-era home at the end of a quiet road, newly renovated — original bones, antique clocks and artwork throughout, with a fully updated kitchen and baths. Washer and dryer, grill out back, reliable wifi and multiple desks. SLEEPS 8 One king bedroom, one queen bedroom, and a third with two twin beds. The office has a full-size futon, with an air mattress available if needed. EVERY SEASON Mini-split A/C for summer. Hot-water radiators, a woodstove and an outdoor firepit for fall & winter. In snow season the driveway is plowed and the walk and patio shoveled before you arrive. OUTSIDE The screened back deck is the room everyone claims, looking out over a field with weeping willows at the edge and wildlife passing through. Croquet, badminton and cornhole on the lawn; board games and puzzles inside when it rains. THE VILLAGE, A .5 MILE WALK Cafés and shops, the Norfolk Library and Norfolk Historical Socieuty, plus live music at Infinity Music Hall. In summer the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival brings Yale School of Music performances to the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate. Free tennis, pickleball and a playground at Botelle School on Route 44, 5 minutes by car. OUTDOORS Hiking in every direction: Haystack Mountain, Dennis Hill, Campbell Falls. Norfolk is the Icebox of Connecticut and leans into it — learn-to-curl at the Norfolk Curling Club; skiing at Mohawk Mountain. Guest access There is a code for the front door that is provided prior to check in. Please note the house is at the end of a dead end road. During winter months driveway might require 4 wheel drive to access in snow (even when plowed). Street parking is always available, with a 50 foot (shoveled) walkway to the house. Other things to note GETTING AROUND Downtown Norfolk is a half-mile walk, roughly 10 minutes by foot. A car is necessary for trailheads, Botelle School and anything past the village. LAUNDRY Washer and dryer are in the basement, down a flight of stairs. WILDLIFE We're on the edge of the woods and it shows — turkey and deer pass through constantly, and black bear are regular visitors. Please keep food indoors and trash secured, and give any bear you see a wide berth. Watching them cross the field from the screened deck is one of the best parts of staying here. FIREWOOD Usually on hand, though we can't promise it every stay. Message us before you travel and we'll let you know what's there.
