The all-powerful O’Briens of Thomond laid claim to the place and took up residence there for a few centuries. During the sieges of Limerick in 1690/91 it drew the attention of William of Orange and his lieutenant-general, Godert de Ginkel. The ‘grim Dutch gunner’ trained his ordnance on the castle destroying it. The ruins are just inside the gate of Stormont while behind the house is an area of old woodland.
