SEASIDE TOURIST OFFER The central strip of the coast is characterized by generally stony, but also sandy, beaches and steep seas. The area, located near Monte Conero, is completely flat and this makes it very suitable for walks along the seafront; Furthermore, the quiet and serene environment enjoyed by the area makes it suitable for family tourism. Modern bathing establishments with playgrounds for children, the possibility of practicing water sports, three cycle paths (along the Potenza river, near the Sorbelli provincial road and in the Scossicci area) make Porto Recanati one of the busiest seaside resorts in the Marche. WHAT TO VISIT The town offers some important evidence of its past. In the main square stands the medieval Castello Svevo, donated by Federico II to the city, which houses the "Attilio Moroni" Municipal Art Gallery on the first floor. The large courtyard houses the Beniamino Gigli arena, named after the famous tenor from Recanati which, during the summer season, becomes stage of a large carnet of musical events. The seafaring tradition of Porto Recanati is well documented in the Sea Museum, which is located in the complex of the former fish market, a modern structure on two levels built between * and * next to the old fish market. To the south of the city is the archaeological area of the Roman city Potentia, near which the remains of the Abbey of Santa Maria in Potenza, founded by the order of the crucifers in the 12th century, are visible. In the Scossicci valley stands the small church of the Banderuola, built on the site where, according to tradition, the Holy House (now kept in the famous Sanctuary of Loreto) stopped for the first time during its translation to Italy. In the Montatrice area stands the Villino Terni, in Art Nouveau style, whose lounge and ground floor were frescoed by the local painter Biagio Biagetti. A typical dish of the Marche town is brodetto, a single fish-based dish. The Porto Recanati variant involves the absence of tomato and the addition of zafferanella or saffronone (wild saffron from the Conero) which gives the dish a yellowish colour.
