Luxurious Room in country home, sauna, view, light
Get away from the tourist hub and experience the real Guatemala. My exquisite home/art gallery is outside of an indigenous agricultural village about 25 minutes from Antigua. This upstairs bedroom is full of warmth, air and light, with huge windows facing a breathtaking view of the great volcano, Agua, and the surrounding countryside. A spacious room in a 3 bedroom mansion, with a private bath/shower and tub. Gorgeous brick, wood burning sauna (temescal). foot and full body massage offered. The space Santa Caterina Barahona is warm and welcoming, one of the 2 safest villages in all of Guatemala. The house in an indigenous village, but it is luxurious, with big, bright rooms, an ample open living area, a fully equipped cook's kitchen and a beautiful dining room and living room furnished with New England antiques from my mother's home in Western MA. Designed for and by and artist, whose paintings hang throughout the house (and are for sale) There is nothing like it in all of Guatemala. I have a full time caretaker, who lives on the property with her family. She and her sister are master weavers and can usually be seen on their front porch weaving. A bus to Antigua passes by every 15 minutes, but we can also help you arrange transportation. I will provide you the phone numbers of 3 trusted drivers, and usually arrange transportation for my guests to and from the airport. There are several charming restaurants within walking distance, and many more in the village. Raised beds in front of the house provide fresh salad pickings, and small village stores have fruit, vegetables and essentials available. I am an artist, and this is an ideal artist or writers retreat! And so many have remarked on the peace and healing they feel here. Let us know at least an hour in advance if you would like a sauna, so we can light the fire, and provide fresh herbs. The sauna is 70 Quezales extra. My guardiana also gives amazing foot rubs for 60 Q Guest access In addition to the common spaces of the house, the guests have access to long country walks public transportation, good cooking and more than anything else the peace and beauty of the countryside, and the warmth of the Guatemalan people!
