A popular seaside resort with a pier, the town markets itself on its historic links with the Vikings and an annual festival is held each year in early September; it also has shops, restaurants and a promenade. Take time to explore the islands of Cumbrae; Great Cumbrae is the larger of the two islands in the lower Firth of Clyde in western Scotland. The island is sometimes called Millport, after its main town. Home to the Cathedral of The Isles and the FSC Millport field study centre, the island has a community of 1,300 residents. Or take a trip to Arran and the Isle of Bute or catch a ferry to Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula, which gives you great access to the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
