Oystercatcher

Description

Located on the idyllic Solway estuary, metres from the water's edge, surrounded by the renowned RSPB Campfield Marsh. By a unique wetland of raised peat bogs, marshes and ponds, A haven for a huge variety of bird life, shoreline waders to geese to owls and woodpeckers. Located amid Low Abbey's woodland, rich with narcissi and bluebells in the spring, adjacent to the old damson orchard, at the end of Hadrian's Wall. A truly luxurious shepherd's hut with all amenities for a great rural stay. The space A luxuriously appointed large - 20 foot - Shepherd’s hut, with high quality fittings, mains electricity, water and sewage. Private shower room with generous sized shower with rainforest option, wc and wash basin. Wood burning stove with orchard wood provided. Additional electric heater. Folding dining table and chairs, built in seating, kitchen area with hob, oven, sink, and fridge freezer. Bedroom area with double bunks and TV. Barbecue, fire pit and outdoor seating on Oystercatcher’s patio. Size and facilities make it suitable for longer stays. Ideal for 2 people, but double bunk makes it a possibility for 2 adults and up to 2 children. Guest access Guests use private entrance from the road, with grass hard standing area for 2 vehicles. Guests have access to woodland towards the end of the plot, and grassland surrounding the hut. There is an adjacent ancient damson orchard over the bridge, where sheep and ducks live. A drainage channel runs through the grounds so care and supervision is needed for young children. Other things to note Oystercatcher shares the site with our other shepherd’s hut, Sandpiper. The RSPB bird reserve is at the side of the property and a short walk away to the main entrance. Free entry and access to a range of hides and boarded walk ways. Check details at RSPB Campfield Marsh - as seen on BBC Countryfile on Sunday 21st September, 2025. Binoculars are provided in the hut for birdwatching. Access to the beach is from the car park at the western edge of Bowness on Solway, the end point of Hadrians Wall Walk. The hut is a good point from which to explore the quiet, unspoilt Northern Fells of the Lake District, and to discover the mining heritage around Hesket Newmarket and Caldbeck. Keswick, Bassenthwaite, Skiddaw and Whinlatter are within easy reach, less than an hour’s drive away. We have an Art Gallery on site. Please arrange a private viewing by messaging Richard. We have Lake District and local prints by John Rogers, Solway Artist, featuring landscapes, villages and wildlife. We have original artwork of the Solway estuary and we also have photos and prints of wildlife and landscapes from the immediate vicinity, particularly birds spotted by the RSPB reserve. This is a special rural, marshland location, for those seeking peace and quiet, nature and wildlife. There is no Wi-Fi, but there is a generally good 4G signal and good TV reception.. It is quite possible to simply sit outside the hut and watch the wildlife and birds by the adjacent large pool on the RSPB site. The hut makes a great start or finish to Hadrian’s Wall Walk, and is also a great stopover for Hadrian’s Wall and cross-country cycling routes. ( Bike store on site ) The Kings Arms in Bowness serves bar meals and is a very welcoming pub, popular with locals and Hadrians Wall walkers. There is also a bistro and tea room in the village. Do note that the nearest food shop is 5 miles away - we’re located in a the very quiet extreme north-western corner of England, on what locals call “The Island”.
