Between Rome and Naples, on the northwestern edge of the Abruzzo National Park and at the end of the Val di Comino, below the beautiful mountain village of Picinisco lies this 400-year-old tower with 76 square meters on three floors. On the ground floor there is a typical Italian "salone" with a cozy fireplace and small kitchen, on the middle floor the shower room and one bedroom and on the upper floor another bedroom. The space The furnishings in the tower are simple but stylish. Rustic but cozy. And even if there is running water, electricity and a warm shower, our guests put their phone at their side in the best case. Stunning sunsets, a panoramic view stretching for miles that looks like a painting, the gentle sound of the Mollarino River in the background, plus a shepherd letting his sheep graze under the olive trees on the 2.5-acre property – life at Torretta Margiotta has everything you need to escape the hustle and bustle and unwind for a few days. The numerous markets in the area also offer everything you need for great Italian cuisine: olive oil, fresh bread, local wine, meat, ham, salsiccia, ricotta, and hand-picked fruit and vegetables. Guest access The tower includes 1 hectare of olive trees, fruit trees and a small forest. You can also park cars comfortably in front of the tower. The tower has two entrances - one on the ground floor to the "Salone" and the kitchen. And one via an external staircase directly into the middle floor. Inside the tower, a spiral staircase made of steel connects the floors. Other things to note What is there to discover in the area? The Torretta Margiotta is located in Picinisco, in the heart of the Italian region of Lazio – nestled in the impressive mountain landscape of Abruzzo and right at the gates of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. If you love nature, authentic Italian villages, good food and culture, you will find an ideal base for varied excursions here. Nature & National Park Excursions to the nearby Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise National Park are particularly worthwhile. The region offers spectacular mountain landscapes, deep forests, clear mountain streams and numerous hiking trails. With a bit of luck, you can spot wild animals such as deer, wild boar or even the rare Marsican brown bears here. The small mountain villages in the park and along the old mountain roads are also worth a visit. In the immediate vicinity is Pescasseroli, one of the most famous mountain villages in the national park. Numerous hikes and walks start from here. Also worth seeing are Barrea and the beautifully located Lago di Barrea – perfect for a picnic, a walk or a break by the water. Picinisco & the mountain villages You should also explore Picinisco itself in peace. The medieval village is spectacularly located on the mountainside and offers beautiful views over the Comino Valley. In the surrounding area, there are numerous small towns where you can experience the original Italy away from the large crowds of tourists. A particularly beautiful destination is San Donato Val di Comino, a charming medieval town with narrow streets, small squares and an impressive mountain backdrop. Alvito, with its historic center and imposing castle, is also only a few kilometers away. Monasteries, Castles & History Culture enthusiasts will also get their money's worth. An absolute highlight is the Montecassino Abbey, which is spectacularly located on a mountain above Cassino. The famous Benedictine monastery is not only historically significant but also offers impressive views over the surrounding countryside. In Cassino itself, numerous sights serve as reminders of the dramatic events of the Second World War. The Commonwealth War Cemetery and the Museo Historiale offer insights into the history of the Battle of Monte Cassino. The medieval Rocca Janula above Cassino and the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Casinum are also worth a visit. Rome, Naples & Pompeii The location of the Torretta is also ideal for longer day trips: It is located approximately halfway between Rome and Naples. Both cities can be easily reached by rental car. A day trip to Pompeii is also possible. For example, if you want to take the train, you can travel from Cassino to Rome or Naples. A day ticket costs about €14 and makes a trip to one of the big cities particularly easy. However, you don't necessarily have to drive far: The scenery and the small towns around Picinisco are probably the real highlight of the region. Here you experience a side of Italy that is much quieter and more authentic than the well-known tourist destinations. Sea and excursions in the area If you feel like spending a day by the sea in between, you can also take a trip to the Tyrrhenian coast. The coastal towns around Formia, Gaeta and Sperlonga combine beautiful beaches with historic old towns and Mediterranean flair. Gaeta and Sperlonga are particularly wonderful for a day trip. Getting there The Torretta Margiotta is easily accessible by rental car and is conveniently located between Rome and Naples. The airports Rome-Fiumicino, Rome-Ciampino and Naples-Capodichino are each accessible by rental car. An important note: For your stay at the Torretta Margiotta, your own vehicle or a rental car is highly recommended. Without a car, the house is difficult to reach, and the many beautiful places and excursion destinations in the area can hardly be explored in a meaningful way. Whether hiking in the national park, a cappuccino in a medieval mountain village, a visit to the Abbey of Montecassino or a day trip to Rome, Naples or Pompeii – the Torretta Margiotta is an ideal base for discovering a particularly authentic and less touristy side of Italy.
