Other things to note Did you know that Studio Ghibli’s first film Laputa: Castle in the Sky was inspired by the Welsh valleys? During the 1980s, Hayao Miyazaki visited the area and was deeply moved by the spirit of Welsh miners during the strikes — seeing a reflection of Japan’s own labour struggles. His later masterpiece Howl’s Moving Castle was based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones, who grew up in Wales. Welsh mythology continues to echo through Ghibli’s magical landscapes. We’re happy to recommend Studio Ghibli–inspired walking routes, passing through misty hills, waterfalls, and winding railways that could have leapt from an animated world. Let SMARN Wales be your peaceful retreat — a place of story, spirit, and sanctuary.
