Historic house near Snowshoe
Description
Step into a piece of American history. Built before the Civil War, this farmhouse has been thoughtfully restored, while bringing in the comforts that make a stay genuinely relaxing. Set in the mountains, you're just 25 minutes from Snowshoe Resort, 20 minutes from the Cass Railroad, and 10 minutes from the Green Bank Observatory. The skies at night are extraordinary. Whether you're coming to ski, hike, bike, kayak, explore Seneca Forest, or simply to reset - Dunmore welcomes you. The space The house sleeps up to 6 guests across three bedrooms, each with its own character: Iron Shoe (first floor) — King size bed, east- and west-facing windows that catch both the morning light and evening sunsets. Copper Snowshoe (second floor) — Queen bed with panoramic mountain views east and west. Dedicated workspace, AC. Green Snowshoe (second floor) — Queen bed, south and west light, a dedicated workspace, a hanging eggshell chair, AC, and a mini-fridge. Every bedroom has traditional electric radiators, so you're in control of your own comfort regardless of the season. The living room centers on a fireplace and a 65" TV with access to your favorite streaming platforms. Multiple seating arrangements make it easy to gather — or find a quiet corner. The kitchen is fully equipped for real cooking: a six-person dining table, a coffee grinder, drip maker and Moka pot, an indoor grill and air fryer, and plenty of counter space. Propane-heated for warmth on cold mornings. Drinking water runs through a new softening system and reverse osmosis filter. House has only one full bathroom. Parking is on gravel and fits two-three cars comfortably. Guest access East-facing deck — the right place to start the morning with coffee and birdsong as the light comes up over the mountains. West-facing porch — a swing, a dining area, and a grill for cooler weather dinners. Fire pit — for the nights when you want to be outside under the stars with nowhere to be. The Greenbrier Valley and Pocahontas County have some of the darkest skies on the East Coast. The absence of cell towers in the Radio Quiet Zone means no light pollution from towers either — just the Milky Way. Other things to note Snowshoe Mountain Resort — 25 min (skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, summer trails) Green Bank Observatory — 10 min (tours, the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope) Cass Scenic Railroad State Park — 20 min (historic steam train excursions) Seneca lake State Park — surrounding the property (hiking, fishing, backpacking) Greenbrier river trail - 10 mins away. Seneca Rocks — 45 min (iconic climbing and hiking destination) Marlinton, WV — 30 min (groceries, gas, restaurants) This area sits in the National Radio Quiet Zone — a federally protected region with no commercial cell towers. Your phone won't have service, except for WiFi. You'll have full gigabit bradband internet at the house, but cell service is limited in the immediate area. Worth knowing before you arrive, and don't forget to take screenshots.
