El Nido means nest – an intricate construction of interwoven twigs, leaves, and feathers that creates a cozy or snug place in which to rest. And just as birds make their nests, Casa El Nido was built as a retreat of great simplicity, yet of great spatial richness, by using a minimal and simple palette of materials. You are welcomed into the house through the traditional sala with Its old essence preserved in original doors, clay floor tiles, stuccoed and painted walls and ceilings (leaving an exposed vestige of the stone masonry walls and metal beams). From the sala you enter an open space courtyard where the old and new are seamlessly intertwined. This transitional space holds a stone courtyard with gardens, small pool and open air dining area. The kitchen beyond opens to the outdoor area through a wall of folding glass doors. The new construction houses the double-height dining room, the kitchen, half bath, and the first bedroom with en suite bathroom and an interior garden on the ground floor; a study and another bedroom with a full bathroom on the upper floor; and finally the roof terrace with an area for rest and a view of the city. The logic of the design was to position the public areas in the front part of the house and the private ones at the rear in order to create a peaceful sanctuary.
