Description

Adorable studio apartment, complete with private mini-terrace, with its own independent entrance but also connected to the main house. Full of light, this cozy place is ideal for a visiting scholar, for someone working in one of the Puerto Interior complexes, or in the CINVESTAV in Irapuato. A refuge ... or a launching-point to all the enchantments of this magical city! IMPORTANT: you must walk to get here. If this makes you uncomfortable I urge you to seek other accommodations. The space If you like what you see here but the dates you want are not available, please do check out the other possibilities in this Casa del Pozo / House of the Well: there are also two lovely rooms, each with private bath and kitchen privileges! IMPORTANT: you must walk to get here. Either you walk up or you walk down, but walk you must; and there are stairs. Guanajuato was not built with the automobile in mind ;=) If this makes you uncomfortable I urge you to seek other accommodations. So here is the description! Adorable studio apartment, complete with private mini-terrace, with its own independent entrance but also connected to the main house. Full of light, this cozy place is ideal for a visiting scholar, for someone working in one of the Puerto Interior complexes, or in the CINVESTAV in Irapuato. Completely-equipped kitchen with good knives and “batería de cocina / batterie de cuisine ». A refuge ... or a launching-point to all the enchantments of this magical city! You have a sweet small private terrace full of plants and lovely views: this is the studio’s completely independent entrance but you may also enter through the central patio of the main house. In the main house there are various sunny terraces with panoramic views of the beautiful City of Guanajuato. Easy access walking, in minibus, or in taxi. Despite our proximity to the heart of the city, there is a certain tranquillity here which many have found to be very propitious to creative work. This is a people's, not a rich-folks' neighbourhood in an Ibero-American city, so you will hear roosters and dogs and the occasional outburst of ranchera music –as well as the ever-present church bells, still rung by human hands--; but it is all very lively and agreeable. This barrio is friendly and vivacious. Here in the house, you are always welcome to come up to the roof-terrace (azotea) where the sun hits first in the morning; and to enjoy the sunset there with a glass of something. In reality, all the public spaces in this house are here to be enjoyed: the azotea, the central patio, the little north patio with the laundry; except the piano room which is my own work-space. But when there’s a house-concert, everyone is invited! The most important space of all, of course, is the great common area of the city of Guanajuato and its cultural offering, astounding for a city of this size (population ca. 175,000). Between book presentations, art openings, the university’s Cine-Club, poetry readings, concerts, and lectures on various topics, one could be occupied five nights out of seven, and two or three afternoons. Doesn’t leave much time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants here! GETTING HERE: We are an easy 10 minutes’ walk to the Juárez, Principal, and Cervantes Theatres and from the Jardín de la Unión; some 12 minutes’ walk (at the most!) to the principal building of the University. Our street is well-lit and in good shape. Coming down, the stairs of my locked acceso from the Panorámica are very ergonomic and comfortable. The House of the Well is easily accessible on foot, in minibus (one route comes to the foot of our callejón and another to the acceso down from the Panorámica, with an 8-minute walk), and in taxi (right to the door of the acceso). OTHER DETAILS: I provide all sheets (flannel for winter and cotton for summer!!) and towels; both of excellent quality. Plus of course shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel; as well as a hair dryer. For longer-term stays: everything is included except drinking water and laundry. This includes weekly cleaning, gas, water, light, wireless fibre-optic internet. (For your information, average cost of gas as of February 2018 is 600 pesos/tank which includes a good tip for the “gasero”.) LAUNDRY: There is a washing machine –new as of January 2018- available in the north patio: I ask 60 pesos per load to help cover wear and tear on the machine, and I provide detergent. AIRPORT PICKUP is available –and recommendable, most BJX taxistas are not great at finding their way around Guanajuato and will certainly not help you down with your luggage or let you into your room!- as well as bus station pickup. Costs have held steady at US$50 for airport pickup and US$15 for bus station pickup, since 2016. Sometimes there are student or other discounts: be sure to ask! Guest access As mentioned, here in the main house, you are warmly invited to come up to the roof-terrace where the sun hits first in the morning; and to enjoy the sunset with a glass of something. In reality, all the public spaces in this house are here to be enjoyed: the azotea, the central patio, the little north patio with the laundry. Everything except the piano room which is my own work space. As always, when there’s a house-concert here in the Casa del Pozo, you are warmly invited! Other things to note The cultural offering in Guanajuato is extraordinary considering the size of this city: 175,000 people. Between book presentations, poetry readings, concerts, and other events, one could be busy here five out of seven nights of the week, and several afternoons. Barely leaves time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants we have here!
