Local Attractions: - Georgetown Railroad (14 miles): Take a ride on a Steam Locomotive through the mountain. This is an amazing family attraction, and we highly recommend taking a ride. (Especially during the holidays!) - Phoenix Gold Mine (4.2 miles): Take a tour and get to experience a real gold mine! It is estimated that this mine has produced over 100,000 troy ounces of gold in it’s history. This family attraction offers a tour of a real gold mine and also allows you to pan for gold in the flowing mountain creek located on site. - Indian Hot Springs (2.4 miles): George A. Jackson wrote in his journal that he sat in the local hot springs just a day before the first discovery of gold in the Rockies back in 1859. Your vacation can include swimming in the Hot Spring Pool or renting private caves or hot tubs for soaking in the mineral rich hot spring waters. - Colorado Adventure Center (5.1 miles): Colorado Adventure Center, located in Idaho Springs, offers adventures in White Water Rafting, Zip Lines, and an Aerial Adventure Park. You can book any of the exhilarating experiences and take those amazing memories home with you! - Argo Mine & Gondola (2.2 miles): The Argo Mill and Tunnel is a wonder of ingenuity, technology, and entrepreneurial spirit. Begun in 1893, the 4.2-mile-long Argo Tunnel cuts an ingenious path through the hills, draining and servicing hundreds of miles of workings, thereby prolonging the productivity of the famous gold mines in Colorado for decades. On the Argo Gondola, you can glide effortlessly above Virginia Canyon with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Colorado Rockies. Experience the majesty of the mountains from a whole new perspective. Miners Point and Outpost is located at the top where you can soak in the views at 8,800 feet above sea level and grab a nice meal at the top. - AND SO MUCH MORE!! Other things to note We are at 7,700 feet. We recommend not overexerting yourself on the first day (especially coming from sea level) and drink lots of water starting two days before your visit. Most will start to acclimate after a day or so. (Pro Tip: 1 alcoholic drink equals 1.5 alcoholic drinks at altitude!) From Nov through May, AWD and snow tires are required for all stays. I-70 has a chain traffic law for the mountains in which snow specific tires (not all terrain) are required, and if those tires are not on your vehicle, you are required to have chains on hand.
