Description
Dating from the 16th century, Stable Cottage adjoins the rest of the property but has its own front door and is a completely private and self contained space. Downstairs has an entrance hall, sitting room, with original beams and kitchen; upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, one double and one single, bathroom and separate shower room. Perfect for 2/3 adults (3 adults max) or for a family with a baby/child. Close to Salisbury and the New Forest, it's the place to explore Wiltshire. The space Stable Cottage is located on a quiet rural lane, just outside the village of Downton in Wiltshire. Although adjacent to The Barn (where the host lives), guests live in the cottage, which is completely self contained. You enter the property through a wooden gate; on the left is the cottage front door, which opens into a charming entrance hall. Turning left, a step down leads you to the cosy sitting room, with sofas, an armchair and antique desk, plus Sky TV (please use your own account to access Netflix/Prime etc). The TV works absolutely fine but due to the thick walls it’s advisable to leave the sitting room door open to ensure a good signal. Interesting features include the original beams and a wood burning stove. There are enough logs/kindling for a day or two’s use; if more are used there is an extra charge of £5 per basket of logs. Past the sitting room is a brand new well equipped kitchen, with a combi- oven/microwave, small fridge and dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine, milk frother, kitchen table and 3 chairs. If you need to borrow my washing machine & tumble drier you are more than welcome (I charge an extra £10 for this). From the hall, a carpeted staircase leads you upstairs to the two bedrooms; a double with queen size pine painted wooden bed, chest of drawers, small hanging cupboard and bedside tables . The single bedroom has a 4 foot bed, so larger than the average single bed, with a small cupboard and bedside table. Along the landing is a cosy cottage style bathroom and a separate shower room, which has recently been upgraded. Please note there is a very sloping 16th century ceiling along the landing, so please be aware of this if you are very tall! There are plenty of books to read should you wish to borrow any during your visit, and if you have small children, there’s a toy chest full of toys and books which you’re welcome to use. There are games, puzzles and a backgammon set inside the pine chest in the hall. I can also lend a travel cot and bedding, a high chair and bouncy chair. There is a wood panelled stair gate at the top of the stairs. Heating The gas boiler is located inside a cupboard in the kitchen. There is a thermostat on the wall which can be adjusted to suit your needs…it’s set at 21 degrees so please return it to that temperature before you check out. The radiators have individual thermostats, so again, you can adjust the temperature. Guest access You can park in the driveway and then access the cottage through a wooden gate (please don’t use the front door as seen from the road). Entrance to the cottage is on the left of the property, under the pergola, and the door leads you into the entrance hall - there are olive trees in pots either side of the door. Children can make use of a sandpit. Other things to note There is a fabulous bakery and farmshop 100 metres from the cottage. Stable & Wick sells the best coffee, delicious home made sourdough bread, focaccia toasties, pastries, cakes and brownies. The beef and lamb comes straight from the farm and it even sells award winning peanut butter made a mile up Wick Lane! If you love walking or cycling, it’s the perfect location for exploring this beautiful part of south Wiltshire. As a keen walker & cyclist myself, I’m always happy to suggest routes. Downton is within walking distance of the cottage (approx 10-15 mins) and has several pubs, Co-op supermarket open 7 days a week, cafe, pharmacy and hairdresser/barber. Explore the beautiful water meadows and the ancient Moot Gardens or walk along the Avon Vally Way. There’s a well equipped playground in the village, next to the village hall.
