The village is a well-kept secret in Trás-os-Montes and is an ideal weekend getaway. The village is small but full of charm. It is one of the greatest symbols of the cold land of Trás-os-Montes, where the warmth of its people stands out and captivates us. The landscapes are superb and the rural and picturesque daily life serve as the perfect setting for a weekend getaway. The first thing that stands out when you arrive in Gimonde is its bridge. Commonly known as Ponte Velha, the Gimonde Bridge crosses the Malara River. At the origin of this crossing was a primitive structure built by the Romans and which integrated the connection between Braga and Astorga, also passing through Chaves. It would, therefore, be a crucial point of passage in Trás-os-Montes. Gimonde The bridge also served the inhabitants of the ancient “castro de Gimonde”, a small village from Roman times that existed on the outskirts of the current village. Later, this Roman structure that crossed the river was enlarged, using for this purpose the most typical material of the region: shale. The result is the bridge we see today: beautiful, simple and picturesque. A monument of which the inhabitants of Gimonde are very proud and which serves as the perfect setting for a walk along the river, while enjoying the typical houses of Trás-os-Montes, with a structure that clearly shows the main activity of this place: agriculture. Gimonde had some regional importance in the past. Pilgrims passed through here on their way to Santiago de Compostela, which is a variant of the Portuguese inland route. This constant passage of people brought a certain dynamism to the village that, over time, has been lost. Gimonde's bread is famous throughout the region. The recipe is almost a secret of the gods but, as it should be, it is ancestral and has been passed down from generation to generation to the present day.
