The town has several good restaurants which serve the freshest seafood and local wines. It is just 15 minutes from Santa Maria di Leuca, at the southern tip of the Salento peninsula. The seafront is known for its lovely villas and elegant buildings. In addition to being the home of Europe’s tallest lighthouse, the town is also the end of the Apulian aqueduct and the waters cascade down an elaborate waterfall. There is plenty to see and explore, beautiful beaches, caves and vineyards where you can taste the excellent local wines. In particular, the famous inlet of Il Ciolo (25 minutes), close to Gagliano del Capo is known for its wonderful, clear waters. The historic town of Gallipoli (35 minutes) is a very popular tourist destination during the summer months. In Greek, Gallipoli means “beautiful city” and the town does not disappoint. The town’s ancient walls soar over the harbour and fishing port. There is a daily fish market where if you go early you can pick up the freshest catch of the day.
