Other things to note Alas del Éste complex invites you to take walks on the beach at sunrise and especially at sunset. Watching the sunset in this part of the country is a real privilege for the eyes and cameras. Bike rides are another recommended option, as is enjoying a drink at the beach stopover. Nearby is a golf club for golf enthusiasts, at kilometer 116.5 of the Interbalnearia route. Laguna del Sauce: The “Laguna del Sauce” road, which leads to this walk, leaves directly from the Tío Tom resort, crossing the Interbalnearia route. There you can sail or simply walk around a 70 km2 body of water, where there is also a beach for swimming and good fishing spots. Arboretum Lussich Park Museum: An ideal walk to spend the day with the family, with almost 200 hectares of forest and more than 400 species of exotic and native trees. It also has an old residence that functions as a museum. It has guided tours, free admission and is open between 10 am and 6 pm. It is reached from the Interbalnearia route, a kilometer and a half past the junction with route 12. Turn left on Antonio Lussich Street and the park is 500 meters further on. Casapueblo: Visible from Tío Tom beach, it is difficult to resist learning about the great work of the master Carlos Páez Vilaró. Sometimes defined as “a great sculpture where it is possible to live”, inside there is a hotel, a restaurant and a museum open to the public all year round. Nearby is a craft fair where you can buy souvenirs. To get there, take the Interbalnearia route and at kilometer 119.5, turn right onto Camino a la Ballena. Lapataia: Historic farm declared of tourist interest, just 15 minutes by car. It is a rural enterprise where the dulce de leche that bears its name was born, and which has disputed the first place in Uruguay for almost 30 years. Facilities include a restaurant serving grilled delicacies, and an extensive setting with activities for all ages. How to get there: Take the Interbalnearia road eastbound until you pass Route 12, then you'll reach Camino Lussich. Turn left on that path and again to the left on the second neighboring road that leads north. Lapataia is five kilometers further on. Dunes on the beach Nearby resorts As part of the Punta Ballena area, Tío Tom beach is considered a “resort” of Punta del Este and has its reference center in the Peninsula. Tío Tom vacationers usually go to downtown Punta to experience its daytime or nightlife. Closer by, there are other nice resorts to visit. To the west is neighboring Chihuahua, world famous for being Punta's nudist beach, with a gay friendly spirit and crowds that arrive every summer. To the east, next to Tío Tom is Solanas, where La Rinconada is the place on the beach officially designated for motorized boats to access the water. A little further on, the Punta Ballena Peninsula is visited to see Casapueblo, or to feel the thrill of danger from El Salto, the cliff area where the bravest try their dives. Food and drink Within Tío Tom there are very attractive options to go out to eat, either on the beach or inside the resorts. We recommend: Tommy Bistró: An exclusive inn located among palm trees on the beach, which is among the best options to go out to eat in the area, with the plus of the ocean view (especially at sunset). The menu covers the most complete and diverse European and Caribbean styles, although it also offers simple dishes such as pizza or sandwiches. It is located at the end of Calle Laguna del Sauce Explora Beach Bar: Located in the Chihuahua resort, it is a more intimate inn that welcomes visitors at the entrance to the naturist beach. The dishes are prepared on the spot and are excellent value for money. Seafood stands out, especially the baby squid Las Terrazas: Inside Casapueblo, this restaurant offers an unparalleled panoramic view of Portezuelo Bay. A good option for those looking for something cheaper. The menu includes simple dishes; we recommend saving your appetite for the exquisite desserts. Nightlife At Tommy Bistró, on the beach, some nights there are events that turn the hotel into a nightclub with a DJ, attracting hundreds of people. Something smaller but no less enjoyable happens in neighboring Chihuahua, where the Mulata bar and restaurant turns into an outdoor bowling alley on weekends and, as if that weren't enough, karaoke on Sundays, all in a gay-friendly atmosphere. Those looking for something calmer have the restaurant and Jazz Club Medio y Medio in Solanas, where you can listen to good music at night, sitting at a table with dim light having a drink. Finally, there is always the option of going to the center of the great Punta Esteña movement, just a 10-minute drive away. Services Tio Tom has very good transport connections, both interdepartmental and local, and the International Airport in Laguna del Sauce is just three kilometers to the west. It is an area directly linked to Punta Ballena and Punta del Este, so it only has a warehouse that has the basics, in the rest of the services it is complemented by its neighbors. There is a service station at kilometer 118 of the Interbalnearia route, where we find the small Solanas shopping center.
