Wood-burning stove, woods and dog-friendly
La Casa della Rocca
Description
An entire house on three levels in a stone village at an altitude of 1,000 meters, on the slopes of Mount Nuria. Two bedrooms, a kitchen, a washing machine, and a balcony overlooking the valley: in October, the forest in front turns golden. In winter, we light the pellet stove before you arrive. The trails start right at the front door. The dog comes with you, at no extra charge. Rome is an hour and a half away, but it feels like another century. We are Ale and Sonia: we're always the ones who answer. The space The house is all yours: three levels, two bedrooms, up to four people. Fully equipped kitchen — breakfast is not provided, and for us, that's an advantage: you can have it in your pajamas on the balcony, whenever you want. Washing machine, Wi-Fi, barbecue. The balcony overlooks the valley and the woods that rise above the village. In autumn, it's where we end up almost every evening: the sun setting behind the chestnut groves, a hot chocolate or a glass of red wine, and nothing else to do. From October onward, the pellet stove is the heart of the house. If you let us know what time you're arriving, it will already be on when you get here. We are in Piazza Santa Maria Assunta, in Rocca di Fondi: an authentic, small village where you hear nothing in the evening. Guest access The entire house, on three levels, and the balcony: you don't share anything with anyone. Check-in is self-service, with a key box. The day before, we'll send you directions for getting here, a photo showing where the lockbox is located, and the code to open it. Take the keys and go inside. You can arrive at whatever time suits you, even late, even if you leave Rome after work — no one will be waiting for you with a stopwatch in hand, and there's no schedule to rush to meet on the highway. Self-service doesn't mean you're on your own: we're always available by text. Where to go for a walk, where to eat well, how the stove works, what's going on in town that weekend — ask us, and we'll get back to you right away. We are Ale and Sonia, and we manage the house. Other things to note On foot from the house: the trails through the woods above the village. In October, you can walk among the chestnut groves; from mid-October to early November, the beech forest of Mount Nuria (1,880 m) is at its most colorful. By car: Antrodoco is 5 km away, with shops and a bakery. Lake Paterno and the Piscignola plateau are just a little further on. Mount Terminillo, Rieti and L'Aquila can be visited in a day, and Greccio – where the nativity scene was created in 1223 – is 50 minutes away: a full-day trip, the kind that fits well into a three- or four-night stay. On the last weekend of October, Antrodoco hosts the Festa d'Autunno, the chestnut festival: October 31 and November 1, a ten-minute drive away. Dogs are welcome, at no extra charge. The forest starts a hundred yards from the door. How to get here: by car. There is a train station one kilometer away, but the climb is steep and it's not an easy walk. If you're arriving by train, let us know in advance and we'll make arrangements. Parking: You can leave your car in the free spaces in the village and in the surrounding area. These are not reserved spots, but we have never seen anyone be unable to find parking. Breakfast: Not included – the kitchen is yours. We'll tell you where to buy bread in Antrodoco.
