Villa del Sol is perched high up on a hill close to the Ocean with dramatic views of the water and islands beyond. It has two adjoining 1BR apartments on the first floor that face onto the pool and ocean below. The 1BR/East apartment is tastefully furnished with everything you need for your stay, including bedding, towels, beach towels, beach chairs, beach umbrella, and a cooler. There are boogie boards and snorkeling gear for shared use in the laundry room. All the furniture and furnishings are high quality and in good condition. The apartment also has WIFI and cable. The spacious bedroom, which has AC and ample storage, has a comfortable king bed. The bedroom also has a futon couch which opens into an optional single-size bed. The bedroom has room-darkening curtains for nighttime. The tiled bath has a walk-in shower. The apartment has an open floor plan that maximizes light and the spectacular views. The full kitchen, with gas cook-top, microwave, refrigerator, blender, toaster, plates/dishes/glasses/cups and Calphalon cookware, opens onto the dining area, with wicker table and chairs, and living area, with a couch, chair and a flat-screen TV with cable. Immediately outside the apartment is a covered deck with a café table and chairs overlooking the in-ground saltwater pool, which is surrounded by a coral-stone patio with an outdoor shower. The pool area is bordered by palm and fruit trees and overlooks the ocean. Lounge chairs and a charcoal grill are provided. For those who need a bigger space, the 1BR/East apartment can be combined with the adjoining 1BR/West apartment, which has a connecting door. WEEKLY DISCOUNT Our rates vary by season, but we offer 20% off our daily rate for stays of a week or more year-round. If your plans change, you can cancel your booking up to 5 days prior to your start date for a full refund. HOW TO GET TO VIEQUES (VQS): Most of our guests coming from outside Puerto Rico fly into San Juan International Airport (SJU) from their home city, arriving at SJU in early or mid-afternoon so they can get to Vieques the same day. The two ways to get to Vieques are by commuter flight or by ferry. COMMUTER FLIGHT: Many visitors take the 25-minute small airplane flight on Cape Air or Seaborne Airlines from SJU to Vieques (VQS) after arrival at SJU. A second option is to take a 15-minute cab ride from SJU to the other airport in San Juan, San Juan Isla Grande (SIG), and fly to VQS on Vieques Airlink (VAL), whose flights are less expensive. A third option is to take the hour-long/$90 cab ride from SJU to the small airport in Ceiba (CEI) and fly to VQS on VAL. The flight takes less than 10-minutes and costs under $50, so this method is especially cost effective for larger groups. You will need to do an online search for the local airline info as Airbnb does not allow us to post this info on our listing. Both VAL and Seaborne charge $1/pound for luggage over 25# (including purses and backpacks) so to try to pack light. FERRY: Many of our guests take the Ceiba ferry to Vieques. Ceiba is located a 1-hour/$90 cab ride east of San Juan. You will need to do a web search for the website for the Puerto Rico Ferry, as Airbnb does not allow us to post this info on our listing. Tickets are inexpensive and can be booked online, but only a month or two ahead. Book early as only 20% of the tickets are offered online and can sell out. The remaining 80% of tickets are sold at the ticket office at the ferry. Some of the boats, called passenger/cargo boats, also take cars but NOT rental cars, and vehicle tickets are sold only to Vieques residents and businesses transporting goods to Vieques because of shortage of space. If you have rented a car on the main island, you can leave it in short-term parking in Ceiba just past the ferry terminal for $15/day. There is a shuttle between the ferry dock and the short-term parking. RENTING A CAR You will need to rent a vehicle to get around on Vieques. Taxis are in short supply in Vieques and Uber has not made it to Vieques yet. Cars rented on the main island of PR cannot be brought over on the ferry. Below are the car rental agencies on Vieques. You should reserve your car well in advance, as cars can rent up fully on Vieques, even during low season. Confirm when your car rental agency closes, as some close early. Golf carts are rented and permitted on the local roads, but they go slow, are open to the weather, and we do not recommend them unless you can’t find a car. * Maritza's Car Rental (our favorite) * Vieques Car Rental * JW Cars Vieques (newer company with inexpensive SUVs). * Avis Car Rental (may close at 3pm) * Vieques UTV Rental (Jeeps and golf carts) * Island Jeep/Coqui Car Rental * Chepito's Car Rental (older cars, no website) You will need to do a web search for the websites and phone numbers of these agencies, as Airbnb does not allow us to post this information. Most of the agencies will pick you up at the airport or ferry and take you back to their office but most close by 5pm, so plan accordingly. Only JW Cars will leave a car at the airport or ferry with a key hidden for later arrivals. CELL PHONES Cell phone from the continental US work in PR and on Vieques without roaming charges. AT&T and T-Mobile seem to have the strongest cell signal here, but Verizon and Sprint cellphones work OK too. None of the carriers provide good signal in the furthest corners of the island. CHECK IN/CHECK OUT Check-in on your day of arrival is from 4-8 pm. Check-out on your day of departure is by 10 am.
