Description

Historic listed house in the heart of the West Cork countryside. 19th century gate lodge, built in the gothic revival architectural style. Situated in the peaceful hamlet of Coolkellure, approximately 6 km from Dunmanway, 30 mins from beautiful beaches and 50 mins from Cork city and airport. Ideally placed to explore the Wild Atlantic Way, Ring of Beara, Mizen Head and Gougane Barra. 1 acre grounds, views of Nowen Hill and 5 mins walk to a beautiful lake. Excellent hiking and biking area. The space Two bedroom, two bathroom (one en-suite) home with large, vaulted living space, including fully equipped kitchen, dining and living area. The largest bedroom has a super-king-size bed, a queen size sofa bed and an en-suite shower room. The second bedroom has a king-size bed. All living facilities are situated on the ground floor. However, there is a reading area and playroom in the mezzanine overlooking the main hall that you can use if you wish. A large picture window from the living area overlooks the garden, with views of Nowen Hill (the largest local mountain). The property is detached with one acre gardens. Green/eco features We have converted the oil boiler to run on 100% vegetable oil (HVO). This reduces carbon emissions by 90% and is a renewable fuel source. The electricity is provided by “eco power”. 100% renewable entirely from Irish based wind turbines. All lights are ultra low energy LED and we have added a “Tado” smart thermostat for heating controls. Guest access We are renting out the newer part of the house to fund the completion of renovations to the old house, which we hope to offer soon. There is a separating door between the two parts of the house which is locked. There is no one living in the old part of the house, so you will have complete privacy. Other things to note Directions to the lake Turn left out the gate and take the left road that goes round the back of the house and you will come to the church on your left. Just past the church there is a farm gate on the left for the track that goes down to the lake. Places to eat In Dunmanway, there is a restaurant in the Parkway Hotel which is good for more traditional type food and popular locally. There is also a Chinese restaurant, Fen Fong, which the locals mostly use as a takeaway but it does have a restaurant as well. Wild Garlic and Mirabelles in Dunmanway are very nice for lunch or coffee but only open during the day. There are 3 takeaways in Dunmanway: Dan's diner (fish and chips, burgers, pizzas, chicken etc), Feng Fong Chinese (as above) and the Rose on the high street, which has a wide variety of Indian, pizzas, burgers, chips etc If you're looking for a pint in Dunmanway, the Shamrock bar is worth checking out for the authentic West Cork experience! Further afield, the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery (about 30 mins drive) is particularly nice and well worth a visit. Its a lovely town, with great beaches and clifftop walks as well. In Clonakilty (also about 30 mins away) you are also spoilt for choice with great restaurants. Also a lovely town to visit. Health and safety If you are bringing children or animals in particular, please be aware of the following: - There is a pond in the garden that is covered with some fencing to stop anyone falling in, but be aware it is there. - There is also a small stream in the garden, that is often dry but might have some shallow water after heavy rain. - If you have a dog, please be aware that there are sometimes sheep and other livestock in the fields around the property, so they must not be allowed to run in those fields. - There is a colony of wild bees living in the rafters of the old house. They will not bother anyone unless they feel under attack, but we just wish guests to be aware in case they have an allergy.
