Description
Welcome to winter at the off-the-grid getaway! This tiny house is on stilts on the edge of the Alplaus Creek. If you want to get away from screens and tech, and enjoy tending a woodstove, this might be for you. Park in the marked spot near 41 Hill St and walk down the 500 ft trail. You can read by the woodstove, fish, write, have a campfire, or watch wildlife from the balcony. A canoe is provided in the summer. The space The river cabin was built by our family in 2023. It is accessible by a 7 foot step ladder. It is a single 8x10 room with a bay window and balcony overlooking the Alplaus creek. Location is 42.859853, -73.902745 . The bathroom is an old-fashioned (but new) outhouse. In the cool weather, you can fire up the woodstove (wood is provided). It has a glass-front, so you can see the fire. It'll easily heat the cabin in the coldest weather. It's small, so you might have to get up in the night to reload it with wood. Various board games and puzzles are in the cabin (Uno, Quiddler, Scrabble, Upwords, Connect-4, etc). Also feel free to use the dulcimer and concertina in the cabin. The cabin is built with local lumber (from Pettys' sawmill), real cedar siding, palletwood from all over the world, and the table under the bay window is from a pear tree that was in my brother Pete's back yard. You might see a heron, beaver, various kinds of ducks, rabbits, cardinals, deer, etc. You might hear a great horned owl in the evening. Binoculars are in the cabin. You might see a bald eagle if you canoe to the Mohawk. In summer, you'll hear the peepers, crickets, and katydids at night and see the fireflies just after dark. The cabin solar/battery system has USB ports to allow you to run USB devices (a lantern and small USB fan are already in the cabin). You can swim in the creek and use the canoe in the summer. You can sleep on the couch inside, or sleep underneath in a hammock, or setup a tent if you want. The photos section shows a couple of tent spots. Guest access The cabin is at 42.859853, -73.902745 You can use the dock, small beach, and grassy area which are 50 ft upstream of the cabin. The dock is pulled out in October, but the canoe will still be available. Other things to note - The bathroom is an old-fashioned outhouse. There is no smell because it's a dry style and we empty it each week. - There is no shower (you can bring a portable camp shower if you want, or wash in the creek). - There is a charcoal grill you can use. There is also a cast iron fry pan. - Bring your own sleeping bag & pillow. You can sleep on the futon or on a camp mat on the floor. The futon folds out to a twin size. - Between May and Oct, an option is to paddle your canoe/kayak up the Alplaus Creek from the Mohawk River. - The trail is cleared of snow in the winter.
