Description of the neighborhood The Zerboni building is located in the historic center of Florence, in the most exclusive district of the city. It is located in Via degli Speziali, that is, between Via dei Calzaiuoli (where the Canto del Giglio is) and Piazza della Repubblica. A stone's throw from the house you will find the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio and all the most important historical monuments. Together with Via del Corso, the street was the eastern part of the Roman decumanus maximus, reaching the Porta di Levante, which in the Middle Ages took the name of Porta di San Piero (since it led to the monastery of San Pier Maggiore). Today's name attests to how, since the Renaissance, various apothecaries have been located along the stretch, especially warehouses for the wholesale of raw materials to apothecaries (pharmacists) who produced medicines (hence the variant via degli Speziali "Grossi"). Among the most famous apothecaries, there was the one under the banner of the Golden Pine, run by the Bonaccorsi Perini family, which then ended up being called Pinadori, from their well-known activity[1]. Along this street, on the side of Calimala, the houses and towers of the Elisei rose, from which the Alighieri descended; they had a loggia inside the block, along the disappeared Chiasso della Coroncina, which led to Piazza dei Tre Re; those who arrived at this loggia had the right to asylum and protection from the family, which is why it was also called the "Loggia della Misericordia" [1]. On the other side, towards the Archbishopric, stood the towers and houses of the Sizi and Adimari [2]. At the same time, over time, this title was joined by that of Corso (thus, for example, in the plan of Ferdinando Ruggieri of 1731), since the artery was proposed as one of the central sections of the track where the palio was 'run', that is, the race of the barberi (shaken horses, without jockey) in honor of San Giovanni Battista, patron saint of Florence, on June 24 of each year (a name that still remains today in the nearby Via del Corso)[3]. The canto del Giglio, on the corner with Via dei Calzaiuoli, derives from the city symbol, which was located in this area on the sign of a spice shop (already mentioned in 1470), a tavern and on the facade of the church of Santa Maria Nepotecosa. It is necessary to provide photos of all guests' documents in order to register with the Italian state police portal.
