Casa del río is a 150+ year old traditional Asturias house located over the mostly abandoned village of Gío/Xío, which is BIC (a cultural interest site). The property has a 2000 square metres garden, wildflower meadow, forest area, and several terraces and sitting areas from where guests can enjoy the breathtaking views of the Navia valley and the Doiras reservoir. Casa del río is the perfect way to scape the noise and experience first-hand living a simple and sustainable life in an Asturias village off the beaten track. The property is ideal for people who want to be away from the noise and crowds, as it is quite isolated and the village of Xio has no services at all. There are many activities guests can enjoy, such as kayaking, swimming in the lake (which is 20-30 min trek from the house), cycling, beautiful walks and treks (Puente colgante, Froseira and Demo Cove, Pico del Cuco, Pico del Filso y la Bobia, etc...), and visiting Illano (5 km), Boal (14 km), Pesoz (23 km), Grandas de Salime (30 km), Oscos (34 km), Navia (38 km), mirador de Tiracais y el columpio de Lombatín (10 km), various prehistoric sites part of “Parque histórico de Navia”, and A Paicega (28 km). The coast is only 1 hour away, and Luarca and Playa de las Catedrales are 1 and 15 min away. The property is located in Western Asturias, 2-4 hours away from Oviedo, Covadonga, Ribadesella, Cangas de Onis, Llanes, etc. (please refer to a map for exact distance). The closest services and amenities are a bar, restaurant and local public swimming pool at área recreativa Folgueirou, 5 km away (10 min by car), and supermarket, grocery shop, bars, restaurants, petrol station, bakery, pharmacy, etc in Boal, 15 km away (25 min by car). Guest access The property is 1 km away from the main road (Grandas de Salime-Navia) AS-12. The road is accessible to all kind of vehicles, although a little narrow at times, so please drive slow. Guests have free parking. The property also has some shared areas: patio, terraces, garden, wildflower meadow and forest area. During your stay The host lives on the property and is always available by phone. Other things to note The property has three well-mannered and friendly dogs, one of them a gentle 60 kg mastiff that guards the property. Since guests are staying in nature, they should expect to see animals both indoors and outdoors: wild boars, deer, snakes and cute squirrels, as well as flies, crickets, bugs, ants, centipedes, spiders, bees and wasps, which are part of the house ecosystem. If guests are not happy to share space with them, this may not be the perfect place. Since the closest shops and petrol station are 20 min away in Boal, bringing essentials will make life easier. Most shops in Boal close from Saturday lunchtime until Monday morning, and also close from 1–2 in the afternoon until 3–4 pm. Navia offers bigger supermarkets that are open on Saturday but also close on holidays and Sunday. Guests do not need to bring water, as the house is supplied with beautiful spring water from the mountains, healthier and more sustainable than supermarket-bought water packed in plastic bottles. Please save that waste to the planet. The property is LGTBIQ+ friendly and perfect for female solo travelers.
