Huckleberry Hollow
I’ve spent my whole life having fun "upta camp" with friends & family in this magical place, and now you can, too! Huckleberry Hollow is a special spot surrounded by clear waters, tall trees, wild beaches, forest trails, and... you guessed it... huckleberries! This house is an oasis of beauty and ease right on the shores of Pleasant River Lake-- one of the most pristine places in Maine that's somehow still accessible and only lightly developed. A great place to make happy memories! Huckleberry Hollow is a camp nestled in a neighborhood of camps right on the shores of Pleasant River Lake. It's on a quiet dirt road-- you might occasionally run into friendly folks on the lake or trails, but there’s a secluded feel, and the area is oriented around families and people who love nature. In the summer, you might see folks paddling, fishing, and water skiing on the lake (please give space to the loons and other wildlife!), in the fall there’s lots of local hiking and "leaf peeping", in the winter people come for retreats in the quiet woods, family getaways, ice fishing, ice skating, and cross country skiing, and in the spring I personally love to go up for local river paddling and bird watching before the leaves come out on the trees. Just generally an idyllic place to spend time and enjoy being close to the living world. You'll need a car in order to stay at Huckleberry Hollow-- but if you don't have one, you can travel by plane or bus to Bangor and rent a car there. Once you've got wheels, you'll be well-positioned to get "upta camp" or to get around in the area and see some local sights. Growing up, we loved spending most days on the lake and also going out for adventures around the region! While at the lake, it's fun to get around by kayak, canoe, walking, or ATV/snowmobile. As part of your rental, I'll provide kayaks and a bunch of toys for swimming and playing. If you feel like heading out for local adventures, you might like a whale watching tour in Eastport, a puffin tour out of Bar Harbor, a trip to Acadia National Park, a day visiting all the beaches around Machias and eating at my favorite restaurant (Helen's!), or a hike up a local mountain. It's about 20 minutes to some small shops in Beddington or Aurora, 45 minutes to Machias or Milbridge, an hour from Bangor, Ellsworth, Grand Lake Stream, or Calais, and 90 minutes from Bar Harbor, Belfast, or Eastport.
