Description

Located two blocks from the Springwater Corridor — a 21-mile paved trail for walkers and bikers — in the quiet neighborhood of Ardenwald, you’ll find The Hummingbird Cottage. This whimsical 1930s garden cottage is less than one mile from the charming streets of Sellwood, home to quaint coffee shops and restaurants, boutique shopping, and the iconic Sellwood Riverfront Park. The cottage features organic cotton sheets and goose down comforters in each room and a renovated spa-like main bathroom. The space With Lucid mattresses, organic cotton sheets, goose down comforters, a completely renovated spa-like main bathroom, keyless entry on front and back doors, and plenty of dresser and closet space for your personal belongings—we want this to be your home away from home. Outside, we’ve completely transformed the backyard into a pollinator oasis, where our guests can sample the seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs from our edible garden and often, around sunrise or sunset, you’ll be greeted by the hummingbirds enjoying nectar from their favorite plants. The Backyard Garden: We’ve spent the last two years transforming our backyard into a magical pollinator garden and micro-orchard. Filled with stone pathways and pea gravel—meander through the edible garden and taste what’s in season. Depending upon the time of year you visit, you might find vibrant heirloom tomatoes, crunchy sweet peas, crisp apples, golden raspberries, or juicy pears. Breathe in the scent of roses and lavender and start your day with the hummingbirds, honeybees, and butterflies. In the evening, a new green Weber charcoal grill is perfect for grilling goodies from the garden or kebabs from New Seasons Market down the road. Adirondack chairs and a fire pit, a swaying hammock, and a backyard table with seating for six, promise beautiful memories with family or friends. The Front Yard: The ideal place for a weekend afternoon, our front yard is home to a Puget gold apricot tree, olive trees, and a small cozy lawn that’s good for picnics on sunny days. There are sweet-smelling red roses and plenty of things for the pollinators, like catmint, lavender, and red clover—plus a front porch with seating and a small table that’s pleasant any time of year, from a rainy fall evening to a warm summer morning. The King Bedroom: The King Bedrooom features a king-sized bed with organic cotton sheets and a goose down comforter with a duvet, a two-door closet, a dresser, sheer, blackout curtains, a new Marvin window that looks out onto the garden, and a dedicated workspace. The Queen Bedroom: The Queen Bedroom features a queen-sized bed with organic cotton sheets and a goose down comforter with a duvet, a two-door closet, a dresser, and a new Marvin window that looks out onto the apple trees. The Daybed Room: The Daybed Room features a daybed with trundle and with organic cotton sheets, goose down comforters with duvet covers, a dedicated workspace, corner windows that look out onto a meandering garden pathway in the side yard and the apricot tree in the front yard, and a private bathroom with stall shower. Bathroom 1: Bathroom 1 is a spa-like bathroom that was fully remodeled in 2023, this bathroom features a Kohler soaking bathtub and artwork meant to inspire daydreams of the south of France and the hills of Tuscany; the bathroom is at the back of the house near king and queen bedroom. Light a candle, pour a glass of wine, and let the worries of the day melt away. Bathroom 2: Bathroom 2 is a private bath attached to the daybed room, this features a pedestal sink and a stall shower with a new Kohler shower head. The Living Room: The Living Room has a 43’’ 4K TV with sound bar surround sound and a dining table with seating for four (or pull up a chair and add more); a big comfy couch and two vegan leather club chairs are the ideal place for sipping a Portland-spirit or cup of tea while you watch the birds out the recently-installed Marvin picture widow. The Cottage Kitchen: The Cottage Kitchen features a new induction oven complete with an air fryer, a full-size French door refrigerator that can stock all your goodies, a microwave, and everything you need for meals at home—from a Cuisinart coffee maker to a Breville “Bluicer” which is a blender-meets-juicer. Please note, there is no dishwasher (but we find that adds to the 1930s charm--we hope you think so, too). Front and Back Entrance: The cottage has a front and rear entrance, each with a keyless entry for your convenience. The “mudroom” back entry features a shoe rack and a full-size Kenmore washer and dryer with natural detergent for your use, plenty of hooks to hang your hats and jackets, and lots of umbrellas for those rainy and cozy Portland days. Our hope is that where every you venture next, you carry the magic of The Hummingbird Cottage with you.
