The space Back when we used to do a lot of canoe camping in our younger days, we called this "glamping." FANCY CAMPING! YOU’VE GOT IT ALL... A REFRIGERATOR, A small freezer, A/C EVEN, a nice shower with good water pressure, high-speed WiFi, and an oven ARE ALL wonderful luxuries... GUESS WHAT? We are ALSO fully solar powered! We tried to imagine, if we were returning from a week-long canoe trip, what would we want? A hot shower, a washer and dryer, internet connection, and a delicious hot meal. We are “living the dream in the Adirondacks,” and we are happy to share with others. When you arrive, you will find brochures, maps, and other items to help you choose your adventures. I will provide a fresh bouquet of flowers from the garden and /or wild flowers... depending on what is in season. I will also leave you a small bottle of local maple syrup and locally made soup. I can't promise you a loaf of my homemade sourdough bread... but it's a possibility (depending on the length of your stay and my schedule at that time)! I love to cook. I have camped for up to a month at a time in this camper, so I have ensured that the kitchen is fully equipped, although the space is small... camping enamel dishes, so your are welcome to take them outside, insulated metal mugs for coffee/tea/wine/etc. Large cups, so you can use lots of ice on a hot day. A small toaster, electric hot water kettle, plenty of knives for carving, dicing, chopping, cutting board, can opener, wine opener... Plenty of silverware and cooking utensils. A large spaghetti pot, strainer, baking pans. My personal favorites are the medium and small iron skillets, which I clean and season for you. We are located in the Champlain Valley of the Adirondack Park. The Adirondacks consist of 6 million acres of wilderness, including the highest mountain peaks east of the Rockies, 3,000 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, verdant pine forests, rocky elevations, abundant wildlife, and incredible vistas. The Champlain Valley, also known as the Adirondack Coast, is located on the eastern edge of the Adirondacks. Watch the sun rise over the Green Mountains of Vermont across Lake Champlain. Watch the sun set over the Adirondack Peaks from the rolling hills of Westport and Essex. Lake Champlain is the largest of the Adirondack Lakes (it was once considered the sixth Great Lake). It stretches 125 miles long, with a maximum depth of 400 feet. It accommodates motorboats, sailboats, pontoons, and paddle boats... You can rent a boat at a local marina. According to local legend, you might even catch sight of Champy, our local underwater lake monster. The Lake Champlain region played an important part in early U.S. history, including three wars: The French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Three major forts were built on Lake Champlain: Fort St. Frederic, Fort Ticonderoga, and His Majesty's Fort at Crown Point. Ticonderoga is a well preserved fort; the others are in ruins. Imagine waking up in the morning to bird song. Cooking a hearty breakfast of pancakes with local maple syrup, yogurt, fruit, and bacon. Plan your hike of the day... will it be easy, medium, or challenging? Will you pack lunch, or plan to eat in a local cafe or diner? When you return, take a hot, refreshing shower outdoors, while enjoying the view of the woods.... Cook dinner on the grill, over the firepit, or on the stove indoors. Relax in the Adirondack chairs by the firepit. If it's chilly out (spring/fall... we are closed in winter), you can relax on the front porch with a cozy fire in the woodstove. We have enjoyed visiting the Adirondacks for many years. My husband Richard and I retired in June 2024. We could not think of a more beautiful and peaceful place to live out our retirement years. We finally settled on the sweet gray house in Westport, with 32 acres of wooded land. We love the Westport-Wadhams-Whallonsburg-Essex area. The people are warm and friendly, creative and outdoorsy. We find people who enjoy hiking, crafting, gardening, making music... We have many organic farms nearby, roadside farm stands, farmers' markets, etc. The Grange Hall and Whitcomb's Arts Studio in Whallonsburg are great places to meet people interested in art, jam sessions (every Thursday, 6:30-8:30 pm), and films. Classical music lovers will enjoy incredible performances at the Meadowmount School of Music during their summer program, as well as around the community (roughly June-August). Live theater performances are available right in the Westport train station building! You can find yoga in the park, and the Adirondack history exploration in Elizabethtown is great for a rainy day at the Adirondack History Museum. Check the What's Happening in Westport FB page for local current events. When you make a reservation, I will send you a virtual “packet” of information about places to go, local events, restaurants, etc. I am happy to find items of particular interest for you... just ask. We look forward to meeting you. 😉 Guest access You have the entire fully equipped 28-foot camper, enclosed porch, high-speed satellite internet, full kitchen, indoor full bathroom with composting toilet, outdoor shower and washer/dryer, fire pit with cooking utensils, outdoor seating, outhouse, and 32-acre woodland surroundings. Feel free to explore the private marked walking trails (former logging trails). Park in front of the camper. There are two barns and a gray house nearby, which are not included. My husband Richard is a talented woodworker. He makes beautiful bread knives, cutting boards, furniture, cabinets, as well as urns and caskets. If you're curious, we are happy to show you his work. We are located in a central area… You can reach us easily from I-87, the “Northway,” exit 31. To the east you will find the Champlain Valley, farms, the easier Champlain Area Trail System (CATS) hiking trails, the ferry to Burlington, Vt. To the west you will find Elizabethtown, the gateway to the high peaks region of the Adirondacks (Giant Mountain, Owls Head, Baxter, and more), and on to Keene, Keene Valley, Keene, Lake Placid, etc. Other things to note Please keep in mind... this is a camping experience. You may hear coyotes. You may see deer, foxes, raccoons, opossums, toads, chipmunks, turkeys, owls, and other wildlife. We have seen all of these on or near our land. We have never yet seen bear or raccoons on our property, but it could happen, so please avoid leaving food out unattended. Be aware of mosquitos, biting flies, poison ivy and ticks. We recommend insect repellant. If you don't know what poison ivy looks like, I can show you. If you do touch poison ivy, be sure to scrub thoroughly with soap and cold water within 15 minutes. You'll find a first aid kit in the hallway drawers, if needed. The first aid kit contains an anti-itch solution. Check yourself carefully for ticks. There is a large mirror on the front porch with good light for this purpose. You can pull your socks up over your pant legs for protection. (No, it's not fashionable... but it could prevent a tick bite, so it might be worth your trouble.) It is important to remove them as soon as possible. We are surrounded by woods. Mice and spiders want to come inside. We are fighting a never-ending battle, with brooms, cleaning solutions, mint packets, and traps. Please keep food inside the refrigerator or in snap-on bins (located under the bench seats in the dining area). We scrub and wash down surfaces. We stuff every edge and corner with stainless steel wool to become mouse proof. We run all the dishes through the dishwasher before each visit. We appreciate your help in minimizing crumbs and other temptations. Please note that we do our own cleaning, so we can assure you of our attention to detail. Relax, enjoy, and breathe in the amazing fresh, clean air. Hear the bird songs, enjoy the local waterfalls, mountain views, and endless hiking 🥾 opportunities (easy to challenging). If you’re not sure, I’m always happy to advise, based on my experience and comments from previous guests.
