Documents referring to Fazenda das Almas point to the construction of a wooden bridge over the Piranga River in 1762. On the land of Fazenda do Vau-Açu, donated by Father João do Monte Medeiros, the Chapel of São Sebastião e Almas was built, a branch of the Parish of Senhor Bom Jesus do Monte do Furquim, belonging to Mariana, in 1770. It became a village, with the creation of the municipality emancipated from Mariana in 1857, and was elevated to the category of city in 1866. A law enacted in 1883 changed its name, which was shortened to Ponte Nova. Local development is largely due to the expansion of sugarcane farming, which earned it the title of the largest sugar center in Minas Gerais during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the second decade of the 19th century, exports of sugar, rapadura and brandy had already gained importance, with production being transported by troops of donkeys, mainly to the Mariana market. Still in the mid-19th century, the spread of sugarcane planting in the region meant that most rural properties had their own mills, powered by animal traction or water power, with brown sugar and the form exported to various regions of the then province of Minas Gerais. The first cast iron mill arrived in Ponte Nova in 1860, and the first steam plant, the Ana Florência Plant, built with machines imported from England, was inaugurated in (URL HIDDEN) the installation of a station of the Leopoldina Railway, inaugurated in 1886 by Dom Pedro II, sugar production began to reach more distant markets. Before the end of the century, the Engenho Central do Piranga and the Usina do Vau-Açu were also built, which further multiplied Ponte Nova's production, complemented by numerous smaller mills that functioned as rapadura and brandy factories. In the 20th century, four other sugar and alcohol industries would be established in the municipality: the Jatiboca Plant in 1920, the Pontal Plant and the São José Plant in 1935, and the Santa Helena Plant in 1940. Contemporaneity: With regard to tourism, Ponte Nova became part of the Montanhas e Fé Tourist Circuit Association in February 2011, a member of the Minas Gerais State Tourism Regionalization Program and, since then, has actively participated in the activities of the Tourist Circuit. The city is still part of the area of influence of the Estrada Real and the Rota Imperial, the old Estrada São Pedro de Alcântara, a road that connects Ouro Preto to Vitória/ES and passes through 17 municipalities in Minas Gerais and 14 in Espírito Santo.
