Description
The Hayloft Cottage is open year-round for your country-living pleasure. Winter is here! This is your chance to get away from all the crowds and spend some peaceful down-time in your own, personal retreat. Enjoy the many local hiking trails, the fields, the mountains, and the fresh air. And feel free to bring the pups along (dogs only; limit 2). We have a fenced-in, 1.5 acre lot shared with our other cottage (Amy's Place) and ourselves. The space Over a hundred years ago, the farm was made up of 400 acres of peach and apple trees. The old house dates back to 1911, and the barn is said to be about as old. A portion of the barn was converted into your living quarters, with kitchen and bath on the lower level and the bedroom and living area above. A sliding barn door provides privacy for the bedroom. Do note that there are stairs between the levels. Interior stairs are like those on a ship--steep with a hatchway at the top. The exterior stairs are less adventurous and go directly from the kitchen door to the upstairs sliding door. They are protected from the elements. Guest access You are free to roam our small, 15 acre property. There's a small pond we're recently renovated, a shared 1.5 acre fenced dog lot (if your pets have joined you), a small orchard, and a number of muscadine vines. If in season, try some of the blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, or grapes we grow on the property. Other things to note Though you're less than a hundred miles from Washington, DC, you are in a different world. Cell phones are generally useless. And, given that you're in the country, you may run into critters you don't often see as much in urban areas: raccoons, groundhogs, possums, foxes, cows (LOTS of cows!), horses, rabbits, deer, and maybe even a bear on occasion. If you are into hiking, we're only about 15' away from Old Rag Ranger Station, 20' from Whiteoak Canyon Lower Falls Trailhead, and 30' from Shenandoah National Park's Thornton Gap entrance. There is no television reception out here, but we do have Roku-enabled televisions and a media center for streaming. Our pond is soothing to the soul. And it sports large mouth bass, bluegills, redear sunfish, and catfish! Finally, you have a fire pit and picnic table for your exclusive use.
