The Ocean House is a beach-front gem with amazing ocean views, a lush park-like compound, gated beach access, and style guests describe as exquisite and dreamy. Heated wood floors. High wood ceilings. Roaring surf out every window. Miles of beach out the back door and down an enchanting forested stairway. Close to Olympic National Park, Lake Quinault, Seabrook, Damon Point, North Jetty, Beaches 1 - 4, the Hoh Rainforest, Ruby Beach, and Ocean Shores. Level 2 EV charger/240W outlet. SPACIOUS AND PRIVATE. Guests have the entire house to themselves - all three amazing floors - and a uniquely beautiful and peaceful 4.5-acre forest-to-dunes compound packed with flora and fauna. The property stretches from coastal highway 109 to the Pacific Ocean median high tide line and features a private park and 2,000+ feet of enchanting rainforest trails. Private beach stairs descend 187 steps through a storm-sculpted coastal forest canopy before arriving at the Boathouse and Boathouse Deck, built on the historic Moclips railroad grade. A secure beach gate leads to the grassy dunes of Moclips Beach and then to the cool waters of the Pacific. DESTINATION LOCATION. Travelers from all over the globe trek to the Ocean House for its romantic style and views, and its mix of ocean beach fun, rainforest tranquility, and world-class hiking adventures in nearby Olympic National Park, ranked in the top 100 of all national parks worldwide and #1 in the United States. Located in historic Moclips, Washington, the Ocean House is also just minutes from Pacific Beach, Seabrook, and Oceans Shores. GUEST ACCOLADES. "Spectacular," "magical," "classy," "exquisite," "dreamy," "paradise," "beautiful," "splendid," "superb," "the best," "our favorite Airbnb ever," "top-notch," "gold standard," "fantastic gem," "thoughtfully designed," welcoming," "a flawless stay," "comfortable, "gorgeous," "quiet," "calming," "a jewel," "turnkey," "super clean," "relaxing," "well-stocked," "perfect," "kid friendly," "excellent," "private," etc. BEDS AND BATHS. The Ocean House has five exceptionally fresh, clean, and comfortable beds: a king, three queens, and a double. There are stylish bathrooms on all three floors. TOP FLOOR. The top floor, accessed via open stairway from the main floor, is one of the most romantic and relaxing rooms anywhere, showcasing the Ocean House's exceptional architecture. The 17' high timber-framed wood ceiling of Fir and reclaimed cedar is magical in the light of six dimmable custom art glass fixtures. A classic Mission California king bed and a deluxe iron frame double bed both offer world-class ocean and forest views. Work and take calls/videoconferences at a comfortable desk or relax over coffee or a glass of wine at a small table with two comfy barrel chairs overlooking the ocean and forest. Set the mood by connecting your phone or MP3 player to a portable, Bluetooth-enabled JBL speaker. LOWER FLOOR. Like the other two floors, the lower floor has beautiful heated Douglas fir floors and high, timbered ceilings of fir and cedar. The lower floor also has two queen-size, all-wood Murphy beds, romantic art glass lighting, wonderful forest views, a steam shower, a television, Xbox Series X console (for games and movies), a well-stocked game closet, and a washer and drier. A door separates the main floor and the lower floor. MAIN FLOOR. The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen, large dining table, leather couch, leather club chair, deluxe queen-size all-wood Murphy bed, Internet-enabled television, and an excellent stereo - bring your music player and any adapter necessary to connect to a mini-jack. Or bring down the portable Bluetooth-enabled JBL speaker from upstairs to enjoy music from your phone or MP3 player. Note, the main floor bed is in a common area and has no sound separation from the top floor, due to an open stairway design, limiting its usefulness for most groups. Hence, our 5-person guest limit. Using that bed also requires lifting and moving a fairly light couch, which the housekeepers can do for you upon request. KITCHEN. The kitchen includes staples like a microwave, electric teapot, toaster, coffee grinder, and a French press, as well as some nice extras like a deluxe double-sided commercial waffle iron, a panini press, large crockpot, a Nespresso espresso machine (and coffee pods aplenty), and a Nespresso milk frother. Guests also have full access to a gas BBQ on the back deck overlooking the ocean. The refrigerator is kept relatively empty for guest use. SHOPPING/EATING. The Ocean House is close to restaurants, coffee shops, bars, groceries, and myriad other stores in Seabrook, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Shores. The Olympic National Park is 35 minutes away via the scenic Moclips Highway. GUIDEBOOK. Our 30-page Guidebook includes numerous unique beaches up and down the coast, 20+ epic hikes in and around Olympic National Park, plus all of the local restaurants, shops, bars, museums, recreational opportunities and must-see sights nearby. When viewed in the Airbnb phone app, the Guidebook can navigate you to all of these adventures. Find the Guidebook at Paul's Airbnb Profile. A printed Guidebook and House Manual is also available at the house. BEACH STAIRS. The Ocean House sits 110 feet above Moclips Beach, looking out over the crashing surf of the Pacific Ocean. A magnificent 187-step beach stairway offers a unique journey through a lush coastal landscape and down through a canopy of weather-sculpted spruce and alder trees. A locked private gate provides beach access 24x7. REMOTE WORK. The Ocean House is equipped for remote work and education. See REMOTE WORK/SCHOOL AMENITIES below. MEMORIES BY THE FIRE. Guests often say they created lasting memories visiting and relaxing by fires in the outdoor timbered Shelter. The indoor fireplace is off-limits for insurance reasons, but the hot Rumford fireplace in the Shelter is yours to enjoy for s'mores, roasting hot dogs, or just sharing the incredible views and a beverage or two with friends and family. Your first fire will be set up and ready for you to light. You'll find plenty of firewood stacked conveniently in the Shelter, plus a fully loaded wheelbarrow ready to roll out to the Shelter from one of our two well-stocked woodsheds. THE SHELTER AND PARK. The Shelter is a timbered structure built in the style of a Federal park shelter with a stone fireplace. It looks out over the ocean from a large cleared area we call the Park. The Park is great for tossing one of our many frisbees and other flying disks. We also have footballs, baseballs and gloves, a volleyball net, and a badminton net. OCEAN HOUSE TRAILS. There are 2,000+ feet of winding, mossy rainforest-like trails on the property - Matthew's Trail, Stephanie's Trail, the Bluff Trail, the Park Trail, the Shelter Trail, the Shed Trail, and Guido's Trail - each meandering among tall Sitka Spruce, Hemlock, and Cedar trees and cutting through dense coastal undergrowth, primarily ferns, salal and huckleberry bushes. Our private trails provide endless safe exploration and adventure for kids and a surprisingly therapeutic escape for adults. Tip - make yourself a latte and start your morning by walking the entire trail network. No bikes or other vehicles on the trails. VIEWPOINTS. The Bluff Trail connects three dramatic bluff viewpoints overlooking the Pacific - Sunset Point, North Point, and Chiminea Point. COVERED DECK. A sliding French door on the main level leads to a covered deck with beautiful ocean views framed through a Sitka Spruce forest. At night, backyard trail lights illuminate haunting deformations in the forest canopy recording a century of lashing winter storms and gale-force winds. GAMES, PUZZLES, AND BOOKS. The Ocean House offers an abundance of fun novels and fantastic science, history, nature, design, and picture books. And our game closet is packed with puzzles, children's books and all the fun games - Monopoly, Pictionary, Scrabble, Poker, Clue, Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Trivial Pursuit, Battleship, Operation, Uno, Dominos, Sorry, Scattergories, Twister, Stratego, Picwits, Don't Say It, Outburst, Anomia, Rummikub, 5 Second Rule, Outburst, Taboo, Telestrations, Choice Words, Spy Alley, and Catch Phrase. You'll find an XBox Series X console on the lower level - bring your favorite games. HOUSE GUITAR/SONGBOOKS. We're musicians, so the Ocean House has a house acoustic guitar, an easy-to-use tuner, and songbooks with many popular songs. At least one guest became an accomplished singer-songwriter by starting out on the Ocean House guitar. EXERCISE/FITNESS EQUIPMENT. The Ocean House has great fitness equipment, including two deluxe yoga mats, fitness bands, pairs of neoprene dumbbells (3, 5, 10, 15 lb.), 6.6 lb. leather medicine ball (no slamming), pushup handles, grip strengthening balls, and boxing gloves and punching mitts for two. You'll also find helpful instructions for the equipment. Must be 10 or older. The Ocean Crest Resort offers an excellent pool, sauna, jetted hot tub, spa, and exercise facility just five driveways down. But all in the group must be 18 or older and a day pass costs about $13 - well worth it. DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. Designed by BJSS Duarte Bryant and Cascade Joinery, the Ocean House at Moclips Beach is a rugged yet cozy timber frame featuring 208 masterfully connected Douglas fir beams. The post and beam joinery is complemented by warm Douglas fir floors, captivating high ceilings of Port Orford cedar and reclaimed western red cedar, and a beautiful burnt-sienna faux interior paint scheme by Olympia artist, Annie Mathwig. ART. In addition to numerous artworks by local artists, twenty-three colorful art glass fixtures accentuate the natural beauty of the Ocean House and its environment, all custom-designed and created for the Ocean House by Seattle artist James M. Curtis III. BOATHOUSE DECK. The large Boathouse Deck at the bottom of the beach stairs offers a perfect, up-close view of the ocean and is generally warmer than the rest of the property and downright balmy on a sunny day. The Boathouse interior is off-limits to guests, but the Boathouse deck is always available. 4 MILES OF BEACH. Our forest stretches from the coastal highway to the sandy, grassy dunes of Moclips Beach. You can walk almost two miles in either direction from our private beach gate. JOE CREEK. Go left to the south on the beach as far as Joe Creek, get a latte in Pacific Beach, and visit the Pacific Beach State Park. MOCLIPS RIVER. Head north up the beach to the beautiful Moclips River and visit the heart of historic Moclips, where trains once brought tourists by the thousands, particularly between 1905 and 1914. HISTORIC MOCLIPS HOTEL. At that time, Moclips boasted the largest and fanciest hotel on the entire Pacific Coast. The swanky Moclips Hotel, built in 1905, was first destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt larger and closer to the ocean, only to be destroyed again by historic storms and storm surges between 1911 and 1914. Picturesque trestle pilings stand in and around the Moclips River as timeless reminders of the town's boom era a century ago. RAILROAD. The Boathouse deck railings' train trestle design is a nod to the Boathouse's location atop the historic railroad grade. The tracks were active into the 1970s. Boulders from the original railroad grade are visible on the west side of the Boathouse. The Boathouse's architecture, metalwork, and dark stain are intended to suggest a railroad shed or maintenance building. The Boathouse was built from old-growth wood from locally salvaged trees that fell decades ago. The Boathouse has a timbered interior and is designed to withstand 250 MPH winds. OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK. The organization "More Than Just Parks" ranks Olympic National Park in the top 100 national parks globally and number one in the United States. Olympic National Park is the most diverse national park in America, boasting lowland forests, striking mountain ranges, pristine alpine lakes, sparkling rivers, temperate rain forests (the largest in the lower 48), iconic wildlife, and over 50 miles of wild coastline. And the 35-minute drive to the Park is also scenic and enjoyable, cutting through a deep forest via the lightly traveled Moclips Highway. WINDS. Caution - stay out of the forest in windy conditions, as branches may fall from very high and can cause serious injury. ANIMALS. Many types of animals pass through our forest and some even call it home. We most commonly see squirrels, chipmunks, bunnies, deer, garter snakes, salamanders, weasels, and an astounding variety of birds, including eagles, hawks, falcons, countless songbirds, and owls. A family of three deer often relaxes the Park, a local coyote passes through frequently in the late and early hours, and a medium-sized Black Bear visited the property several times many months ago. LEAVE NO TRACE. The Ocean House property offers an abundance of edible berries (see berry-identification picture in listing), but aside from snacking on berries, please only admire - do not disturb or remove any plants or fungi without prior permission. And be very respectful of our wildlife. Do not chase, catch or bother any animals. The Ocean House is a privately owned nature preserve. Go very easy on our trails, fauna, and flora, and leave no trace. NO HOT TUB. Sorry - we do not have a hot tub and we have no plans to add one. But just a short walk away, guests 18 years and older can use the Ocean Crest Resort's beautiful pool, hot tub, and sauna for about $13 per person. REMOTE WORK/SCHOOL AMENITIES: Ocean House guests benefit from the owner's need for reliable, around-the-clock, state-of-the-art business office systems and connectivity, including: *secure wifi boosted throughout the house and extending to the back deck and the outdoor fireplace shelter; *several comfortable ocean-view workspaces, including a third-floor desk, the large dining room table, and a smaller wood table on the third floor overlooking the forest and ocean; *tripod laptop stand for working anywhere in the house or on the back deck; *23.8" computer monitor for dual-monitor productivity (plus HDMI cable and USB-C adapter; Apple users may need to bring a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter); *unlimited domestic (U.S.) long-distance landline phone service; *modern Bluetooth-enabled landline cordless phone handsets with cellphone and personal headset connectivity, extended (500') wireless range for walking the property during long calls, and built-in speakerphone for hands-free listening, *ultra-comfortable phone/computer headset with noise-canceling mic (located in the stereo closet, along with 3.5mm laptop jack adapter); *color printer-scanner (available for limited use upon request); *tripod-mounted, adjustable LED light array for videoconferencing/workspace lighting ,and *portable tripod-mounted, ring-style lighting system for videoconferencing/workspace lighting. On rare occasions, I might be camped out in the Boathouse down by the beach, particularly if I'm doing or coordinating work on the grounds. If so, I'll be careful to stay well away from the house and out of sight. The Ocean House property stretches from coastal highway 109, down the most deluxe stairway on the Washington coast, through a private beach access gate, and across grassy dunes and soft sand to the median high tide line. Guest Privacy is a top priority at the Ocean House. So interactions will be primarily via the Airbnb app. Soon after your arrival, I might call the Ocean House landline to see if you have any questions. It's also possible we might meet in person and chat briefly at check-in or check-out. But whether or not I'm in the area, our staff are always close if help is needed. Housekeeper Melissa lives within five minutes and Housekeeper/Groundskeeper Pam also lives close and is available to assist. I'm usually with my family in Ballard, Seattle. But there's a chance I might be staying down in the Boathouse, particularly if I'm doing or coordinating work on the grounds. Wherever I am, I strive to be available via Airbnb app or phone 24x7 for questions or assistance. The housekeepers also monitor guest messages and are available to assist with anything if I am unavailable. The day before you arrive I will message you easy "check-in" instructions. The day before you depart I will message you easy "check-out" instructions. If your stay is longer, I might message you a few days in to see how you are doing and ask if you need any housekeeping services. You may notice that the Ocean House compound is guarded by numerous exterior security cameras. There are NONE in the house. We rarely, if ever, review any of the footage - only if there appears to have been some kind of incident, like an animal knocking over a trail light, as sometimes happens. The cameras primarily serve as a security deterrent and provide peace of mind in this somewhat remote location on the edge of the continent. The Ocean House sits 110 feet above Moclips Beach, Washington, looking out over the crashing surf of the Pacific Ocean. Private stairs and a secure beach gate provide easy beach access 24x7. GUIDEBOOK. Our Guidebook has it all - restaurants, bars, beaches, Olympic Park highlights, world-class hikes of every level, family activities, cultural attractions, and shopping options. The Airbnb app can navigate you to all of them. Guidebook link at the bottom of this page. SEABROOK. And just about a mile directly to the south of the Ocean House on Hwy 109 is the awesome town called Seabrook, which has a great Latin cuisine restaurant and tequila bar and called Kokos, an awesome restaurant and bar called the Rising Tide, an outstanding pizza place called Frontager's Pizza, a fun wine and cheese bar, and a great new grocery store, among many other shops and amenities. Great for bike riding, skateboarding, shooting hoops, hiking and exploring. You can rent bikes at Buck's bikes and get maps for the bike trails that are open in the summer. OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK. "More Than Just Parks" ranks Olympic National Park in the top 100 national parks globally and number one in the United States. Olympic National Park is the most diverse national park in America, boasting lowland forests, striking mountain ranges, pristine alpine lakes, sparkling rivers, temperate rain forests (the largest in the lower 48), iconic wildlife, and over 50 miles of wild coastline. LAKE QUINAULT. The Western Approach to the Olympic National Forest is just 35 minutes away via the incredibly scenic Moclips Highway. Enjoy a great meal at the Lake Quinault Lodge and enjoy any number of wonderful old growth hiking trails just across the street from the lodge. To get there, go left out of the driveway for several miles through the town of Moclips. Take a right at the Moclips Highway. In about 23 miles go left on Hwy 101 for about 6 miles and take a right into the Olympic National Park - it's that easy! THE OCEAN CREST. Just four driveways to the north of the Ocean House is the best and fanciest restaurant on the entire Washington Coast - the Ocean Crest Resort and Restaurant. Highly recommend it, especially for date night or any special event - or even just some drinks and appetizers in the bar. Only open for dinner these days unfortunately. PACIFIC BEACH. The little town of Pacific Beach is about a mile away. Head right out of the driveway and take a right at the four-way stop. There you'll find the Surf House Coffee Shop (great lattes, waffles, ice cream, pastries, clam chowder...), the Surf House Pub (burgers, a meatball sandwich, and other pub fair), Sandphifer Gallery, the Wacky Warehouse, the You and I convenience store, and some other small businesses. GROCERIES - There's a large Safeway in Aberdeen along the way and a very nice smaller grocery called Fresh Foods in Seabrook, five minutes from the Ocean House. THE HOH RAINFOREST. The Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center is a two hour scenic drive up the coast and offers some wonderful easy trails amid giant moss-draped trees and fern-lined babbling streams. See the Guidebook for more details on the various hiking trails out of this area. KALALOCH LODGE. Head north of the Lake Quinault area on Hyw 109 for a fantastic visit to Beaches 1 - 4 and a so-so lunch at the Kalaloch Lodge. OCEAN SHORES. There's lots of family fun in Ocean Shores, just 20 minutes south - go carts, putt-putt golf, a movie theater, a nice 18-hole golf course, and some great bars and restaurants. The Galway Bay Irish Bar is always a fun stop (and kid friendly) and Mike's Seafood is pretty awesome. FISHING. If you'd like to drop some cash on excellent guided fishing on the Quinault River, let me know and I'll check with my tribal fishing guide Richard Obi. That's just about a half hour from the Ocean House via the Moclips Highway. All water in the house is double filtered, crystal clear and great tasting. We have a gas BBQ on the back deck and the kitchen includes a professional grade dual waffle iron, large crock pot, panini press, Nespresso machine and milk frother, French press, coffee bean grinder, stainless electric teapot and a toaster. There is usually a good supply of spices, cooking oils, coffee beans (in the freezer) and other assorted food and beverage products available for guest use. We always provide a complementary bottle of wine, complementary chocolates and lots of Nespresso espresso pods. The waters of the Washington coast can be dangerous and extra caution is warranted during the winter months, when the surf and currents are most unpredictable. Children must be closely watched on the beach and neither adults nor children should enter the water alone. The house stereo is excellent and will connect to any device that takes a mini-jack. We endeavor to provide common mini-jack adapters, but bring whatever adapter might be necessary to connect your device, just in case. Except in winter, the outside water faucet closest to the front door runs nice warm water so you can clean sandy clothes or sandy kids before they come in. But dry those feet - the wood floors are very slippery under wet feet.
