Woof, hi, I’m Kobuk the Saint Bernard! Welcome to my log cabin! It’s super cozy, away from the downtown hustle-bustle, and a short walk to the beautiful 16-mile Lost Lake Trail, where I love to hike, wade in streams, and roll in snow. My dog-friendly cabin is in a popular all-season adventure spot for mountain/snow bikers, trail runners, backcountry/cross-country skiers, and snowmachiners. Pack your gear and come on over! We even have ample room for parking boats and other trailered items! Kobuk’s Kabin is private and serene, tucked into a 🌲 lush hillside 🌲 behind our house in the beautiful Lost Lake neighborhood (five miles from downtown Seward). It is 16’ x 24’ and fully log with a queen bed and a queen-sized futon. Full bathroom with toilet, sink, and stand-up shower. Shampoo, body wash, and soft towels await! The kitchenette is “dry” (no running water), but is fully stocked with all of the essentials: fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, toaster, kettle, hot plate with pot and pan, and Brita water pitcher. A sink with running water is only a few steps away in the bathroom. Step off the front porch to cook up your fresh catch or burgers on the propane grill* and then feast at the picnic table. A few yards into the woods in the other direction is a private 🔥 fire pit* 🔥 surrounded by Adirondack chairs and hanging bulb lights. BYOWood 🪵 Kobuk’s Kabin has all the amenities you need to prepare for and relax after a day in the mountains, on the sea, or exploring charming Seward. After a warm shower, enjoy DIY coffee, tea, oatmeal, and morning sun from the porch or breakfast nook. In the evening, pour a glass of wine, gather the s’mores supplies, grab some of the provided outdoor blankets, and cozy up by the fire pit.* For those rainy or snowy days, a TV, collection of DVDs, books, board games, and comfy blankets will come to the rescue. Perhaps most importantly, Kobuk has made sure his 🐶 four-legged canine guests 🐶 are cared for, too: the cabin is stocked with dog treats, food bowls, dog bags, and a tether. This cabin is best-suited for three people aged 12+. Maximum of two children under age 12. No more than two dogs, please, and dogs may not be left unattended at the cabin. *Propane grill and picnic table unavailable during winter months. Access to the fire pit cannot be guaranteed between November-May, although we will make every effort to clear Seward’s heavy and frequent snow from that area before stays during this window. Outside of the log cabin, guests have private access to a fire pit with Adirondack chairs, surrounding forest area, picnic table, propane grill, and two parking spaces. Park however makes the most sense for your crew, but please do not block driveway access to our house. Street parking is safe and does not require a permit; this is preferable if you’re traveling with a large trailer. The electronic versions of ourselves are available 6am-9pm most days during your stay; the flesh versions with our furry companions will periodically be around the property. The cabin is self-checkin with a nifty keypad lock; we'll send you the code shortly before your arrival. We love Alaska, have done a lot of different things, and will talk your ear off with ways for getting the most out of your visit. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or for tips and tricks as you plan your trip. Leave your city worries behind and escape to our lovely Lost Lake neighborhood! The area is off the usual beaten tourist path, but not too remote that you lose cell phone service, utilities, or periodic human contact. Streets are safe and calm and the homes are spread out and separated by lots of trees yet you’re still only a very short drive from downtown Seward (5 miles), the Safeway grocery (4 miles), and The Pit bar and liquor store (2 miles). Lost Lake’s south trailhead is a short (~1/2 mile) walk through the neighborhood. You can backpack, run, bike, or snowmachine directly from the cabin’s front door! The north trailhead at the end of Primrose Spur Road is 13 miles north. Pro-tip: start at the Primrose trailhead and run the trail back to cold beers at the cabin :) Other natural and not-so-natural points of interest: Exit Glacier Road = 2 miles (another 8 to the trailhead) Seward marina / glacier + fishing boat tours = 5 miles Mount Marathon trailhead = 6 miles Lowell Point / Caines Head / kayaking tours = 8 miles Alaska Sealife Center = 6 miles Seward Brewing Company = 6 miles Iditarod Trail historic landmark / race start = 6 miles The Cookery (delicious dinner!) = 6 miles Resurrect Art Coffee Shop = 5 miles Having a car is non-negotiable in Alaska. Need a ride for your adventure? Ask us about a discount on our Subaru rental (based in Anchorage). Getting into Seward (5 miles away) requires a car or dedication to biking. You can take the train from Anchorage to Seward, but then will need to get to the cabin. There is a car rental company near the train depot, but it’s small so definitely plan ahead during peak season to ensure a car is available. Uber/Lyft operations in Seward are spotty / non-existent. There is a local taxi company that services our neighborhood. We can provide that info if you need. THERE IS NO WIFI! Gasp! Your cell phone will work for calls and basic data needs. Your cell phone might NOT work for data streaming (although it also could). If you are planning on mining Bitcoin or doing other data-intensive things, Kobuk recommends staying somewhere else (no offense). He (and we) think this cabin presents a lovely opportunity for overworked, over-connected folks to detox from technology. Embrace it! Go outside! Talk to each other! Have good ol’ 1990’s-style fun! We promise you’ll survive. But don’t take our word for it: Many past guests have specifically told us they truly enjoyed the lack of WiFi, if you can imagine that! THERE ARE DOGS! The eponymous Kobuk and his English Setter sister, Willow, may be on the premises during some or all of your stay. Both love people and other dogs, although Kobuk is a big guy and can have a somewhat scary, protective bark. He’s actually a cuddly goof. We will do our best to make sure our pups are not outside when you arrive (an ETA heads-up will help us greatly with this!) and will keep them away from the cabin while you’re here unless you say otherwise. WE ARE DOG-FRIENDLY...with a couple of very reasonable requests: 1) Please remember to pay the pet fee at checkout. 2) Please do not leave your dog(s) unattended inside or outside of the cabin. This includes leaving dogs at the cabin in a crate. We can help you arrange local dog care or possibly watch your critters ourselves if we’re around - just ask! 3) Please do not let your critters on the futon OR always make sure they sit on one of the provided knit blankets. Fur sticks like an evil, strong magnet to the futon's fabric and is a very big, tedious chore to unstick. Your active participation in the war against fur (especially you lab owners!) is very appreciated and will help us continue to open our doors to Kobuk's canine friends.
