The space Nestled behind a discreet gate of one of Mexico City’s best street taquerias, lies Vecindad Murales - a hidden gem in a traditional early 20th-century Vecindad. This exquisite common courtyard boasts a secret mural museum that features some of Latin America’s most talented muralists. A vecindad is a type of housing arrangement that originated in Mexico in the early 20th century. It refers to a group of small homes or rooms that are clustered around a central courtyard. The term "vecindad" is derived from the Spanish word "vecino", which means "neighbor". Vecindades are often found in the historic center of Mexican cities, and are known for their vibrant, close-knit communities. The central courtyard serves as a gathering place for residents, where they can socialize, play, and relax. Today, vecindades are a popular subject in Mexican literature and film, often portrayed as a symbol of traditional Mexican culture and community spirit. Vecindad Murales aims to provide guests with a truly Mexican cultural and community atmosphere. Built over a hundred years ago, Vecindad Murales is currently a series of row homes where families, artists, actors, environmental activists, and anthropologists live. As a boutique hotel, it offers different housing options such as three-story home for a couple that wants its own space, shared housing arrangements with a roomie feel, or hostel dorm rooms and Japanese sleeping closets to provide affordable spaces for all. It is a truly personalized experience that comes with all the amenities you need to feel at home during your stay. Each home in Vecindad Murales features sustainable technologies such as rainwater harvesting systems, solar hot water shower heaters, solar panels, vegetable gardens with drip irrigation technology, Recycle or Die waste program, worm composters, and drinking water purification stations with a shared water bottle system for guests not to buy bottled water. The building is decorated with trees and vegetable gardens, making it a perfect oasis escape inside one of the world’s largest and most chaotic cities. In 2020, during the heart of the pandemic, neighbors got together and started painting murals in the vecindad. Nowadays, there are seven 10-meter-high murals of muralists from Mexico and Latin America. Vecindad Murales aims to one day be considered the Wynwood Walls of Mexico City. To promote culture and art in Mexico City, Vecindad Murales offers rooms for Artist Residences for creatives of all disciplines. These artist residences provide a private space to work and create, as well as a community of fellow artists to collaborate and connect with. It is a perfect opportunity for visual artists, dancers, writers, composers, and filmmakers to focus on their work in an environment that fosters creativity and community. Vecindad Murales is located a short walk from the center of the colonial neighborhood of Coyoacan, home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. This neighborhood in Mexico City is known for its local bohemian cafes, allowing guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the city's vibrant cultural scene.
