Description

Nestled in a quiet piazza 'Il Mirtilllo' is one of ten houses that make up this ancient square, the oldest part of Chianni village. The Church of San Donato, dominates the piazza and has origins dating back to the 13th century. The house dating back to around 17th century, has maintained it's character of wooden beams, tiled floors and ceilings. The decor is true to it's Tuscan origins of painted plaster walls in traditional colours. Modern appliances compliment this delightful old house . Other things to note Chianni is a medieval town with Etruscan origins. The village has two café/bars, a mini-markets, a flower shop, Tabacchi and a small hardware store. The post office is open until 13.45 pm Monday – Saturday. A gift shop and a pasta shop selling delicious handmade pasta, made on the premises can also be found in the village. A cash point can be found next to the tourist information office in the main square of the village. The village has three good restaurants, with many others a short drive away. The town has been known for years for its olive growing, the extra virgin olive oil of Chianni was created here, an oil with intense colour, a low level of acidity and a fruity flavour. The forests of Chianni and the surrounding areas are home to the wild boar, every second and third weekend of November the oldest food festival in Tuscany is held, where you can taste wild boar dishes and other specialities of the local cuisine. The village is served by a local bus that connects other local villages to Pontedera. The nearest bus stop is outside the post office. From Pontedera you can reach most major cities by using the train station, opposite the bus station. Pisa is a ten minute train ride, Florence around 45 minutes. There is a large car park next to the bus station too should you wish to drive to Pontedera and then use public transport as parking in old Italian cities can be a problem. Driving Distances From Chianni to: Pisa – 42.2 km (29.3 miles) Pisa Airport – 44.1 km (27.4 miles) approx. 50 minutes driving time. Florence – 87.5 km (56.3 miles) Siena – 90.6 km (56.3 miles) Arezzo – 161.0 km (100.0 miles) Voltera – 38.4 km (23.4 miles) Pontedera – 26.3 km (16.4 miles) San Gimignano – 51.2 km (31.2 miles) The area is very popular with walkers and cyclists alike.
