McCarthy Guesthouse - Bear's Den

We are located in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias, the largest National Park in the United States! Enjoy the raw beauty of the Alaskan wilderness from the comfort of our modern apartments in downtown McCarthy. While completely off-the-grid, the Guesthouse boasts McCarthy's only in-suite bathrooms and showers as well as electricity, heat and Wifi! The Bear's Den offers two bedrooms each with a king-sized bed and a futon in the living room. The space The Bear's Den is centrally located in downtown McCarthy, but tucked slightly away from Main Street to ensure a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Within easy walking distance are local eateries such as The Potato, The Golden Saloon, and McCarthy Lodge Bistro as well as the local mercantile store. One of the few remaining original residences dating back to the 1920's, the McCarthy Guesthouse is a historic home that helps you step back in time while still providing modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, hot water, and flush toilets. Guest access There is no direct access to the unit by private vehicle, so if you're driving in you'll need to leave your vehicle on the West side of the Footbridge and pay for parking there. We will provide transportation for check-in and check-out. The Bear's Den is one of two units located in the McCarthy Guesthouse. All guests are more than welcome to walk down to the backyard to visit the garden. Bear's Den guests have access to the back deck with a small table and set of chairs. Please respect the space of the Spruce Moose guests by not using the front porch. Other things to note Please note that Verizon is the only phone provider with service in our area. If you're driving, Chitina will be the last place with phone service for those without Verizon. There is WiFi at the unit as well as a semi-reliable community WiFi network you may access. Due to the off-the-grid nature of the McCarthy Guesthouse, the Bear's Den electrical system is not compatible with heat-producing devices such as coffee makers, microwaves, and curling irons. A special hairdryer is provided for your use and you can always request a thermos of hot water to be brought over in the morning. To get your caffeine fix, we encourage you to visit The Potato or Mountain Arts, both just a block or two away, where a full espresso bar awaits you! We also like to note that, due to the historic nature of the McCarthy Guesthouse, Bear's Den guests may occasionally hear the footsteps of the upstairs Spruce Moose guests. Earplugs are provided to assist in maintaining a quiet and restful environment. Of course, if excessive noise is coming from the upstairs unit, please contact the McCarthy Guesthouse manager to handle the situation.
