POST MARIA UPDATE: The category 5 hurricane devastated Dominica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico on September 2017. Puerto Rico was hit really hard and recovery has been slow but steady since the storm. Our community, like so many others, is still in recovery but the people are resilient and we are seeing restoration in all areas. Puerto Rico still has plenty to offer visitors and my wife and I would like to thank you in advance for helping the recovery effort with your support of the local people and local businesses. Other things to note Here are some tips for day tripping in the South of Puerto Rico: Ponce City- Just 20 min from our place, it is the second largest city in Puerto Rico outside of the San Juan’s metropolitan area. Known locally as the ‘The Pearl of the South’, offers historic districts, culture and nightlife, shopping, great food, art and museums, parks and plazas. Local sports include baseball, basketball, golf and tennis. Ponce also offers casinos, salsa dancing and live music venues and theatre. Salinas Town- Just 20 min from our place, is a small seaside town with small marina and mangrove lined bay. Several excellent seafood restaurants located overlooking the Caribbean sea. The menu typically includes a variety of well known Puerto Rican dishes with a concentration on freshly caught seafood. For $5 per person you can also take advantage of the local boats that circles the marina for beautiful views of the coastline and the many yachts in the marina. Coamo Town- Just 20 min from our place, is located in the southern region, north of Santa Isabel. It offers restaurants and beautiful scenic views of the mountains and distant Caribbean sea. Coamo was the third settlement to be established in Puerto Rico and the cathedral, central buildings and plaza are worth a visit. Best know for the Coamo Thermal Springs. From our place you can easily have wonderful and accessible adventures throughout the island. There are so many charming towns to visit in the South with each offering its particular local flavor. The towns of Orocovis and Barranquitas; east of Villalba and Juana Díaz; and west of Aibonito offer charming restaurants, cafes and bars, rivers, lakes and parks, music and artisanal festivals as well as coffee plantations tours and chocolate making activities.
