Structure Identification Code (CIS): BA07200391000020005 Origins Some trace the origin of trulli back to 1500 BC, when the Greek-classical name tholos indicated a dome placed on a tomb called the Treasure of Atreus. Others, however, refer to the Greek-Byzantine term torullos, which indicated the domed hall of the imperial palace of Constantinople. Finally, the Latin term turris with its alterations turulla, trulla, trullum to indicate a small tower. Trulli are the first example of insulating construction. Cool in summer and warm in winter. Both the walls and the roof cone are raised dry, with no bonds other than limestone chips: so between one piece and another an air chamber is formed that absorbs temperature changes and keeps it constant. The cone-shaped roof of a trullo is built without any framework, only with the "chiancarelle" laid on a shelf one on top of the other in ever narrower circles up to the final funnel. The master trullari made the trullo a self-sufficient dwelling for men and animals; a single room of thirty square meters divided to obtain the hearth, the well, the barn, the storage for the harvest, the rooms to work it. Some wooden beams, still visible in today's trulli, had no structural function but rather served to hang food and supplies, keeping them raised from the ground. The so-called passivity of the trulli structure is able to absorb even the strongest earthquake tremors. A report from 1897 mentions a cyclone that swept away everything, leaving only the trulli intact. https://fb.watch/p6wQbvVc1N/ Other things to note To imagine living in a historic place as it was done years ago. What is a trullo? The term trullo derives from the Greek word trullos which means dome, while the term by which these dry constructions were called, throughout the Murgia, was simply "casedda", literally small house. This is actually a modest but comfortable house built by farmers who cleverly used the most abundant raw material in their area: limestone. Today, the trulli are declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. https://fb.watch/p6wQbvVc1N/ Registration Details IT072003C200057164
