Avocado, mango, ciruela (plum of the Caribbean), pomegranate, cherry, banana and other trees provide a green canopy that shields the house from the hot tropical sun and keep the surroundings roughly 5°C degrees cooler than in the city. The mangroves are a true testament to the pristine condition of the water in the bay. They provide biodiversity and home to an incredible array of species, as well as costal defense against erosion, flooding and hurricanes. Mangroves have also shown to sequester carbon at a rate two to four times greater than mature tropical forests and are considered essential in fighting climate change. The house is located on the outskirts of the city and enjoys the peacefulness of country-style living avoiding the hassle-and-bustle of the major metropolis that Santiago is and, at the same time, it's only a 7 minute car ride or 20 minute bike ride to downtown.
