An "Earthly Paradise" we think so! Our custom built log home sits on a high bluff overlooking the mighty Copper River with a jaw-dropping view of the Wrangell Mtns. You will have a spectacular panoramic view of Mt. Sanford & Mt Drum. Our 2 bedroom log home built with trees from the property will be perfect to base your Alaskan adventure. The very open floor plan of the house is the perfect spot for a family or group of very close friends to enjoy the beauty of the Copper Basin area. You'll get the whole house, 3 acres of privacy, an amazing view, rustic seats on the bluff and all the amenities you need. The house was custom built by us, and has a VERY OPEN floor plan. What we mean by a very open floor plan is there are NO doors upstairs. The master bedroom faces the mountains and the stunning view! It is separated by open hallway and a curtain. So please only consider booking our house if you are very comfortable with the folks you are traveling with! The second bedroom is located in a large room above the garage that also serves as the living room...again NO doors it is all one room. That space can also support a queen size air mattress. It is the perfect space for a family or close friends. There is a couch and loveseat upstairs and the decor is totally Alaskan. Downstairs is another loveseat, a full kitchen with a table right in front of a giant window looking out at the mountains. There is a full bathroom downstairs off of the kitchen- yes it has a door. You will be off the beaten path, but within striking distance of much of the greatness Alaska has to offer! The road to the house is a dirt road. The driveway and outer portion of the house is dirt/gravel as well. Please be aware that the area can be muddy if there has been a lot of rain. That includes the driveway and area around the house. Important to note about our house; it is a custom log house with some leveling challenges. During the spring-summer the permafrost changes, the ground sinks and floors become unlevel. We work hard each season remediate shifting; but would like to be open and clear that you be aware that floors may be unlevel during your stay, which also effects some of the ground floor doors, they still work, just not flawlessly. At the house you will have tv, wi-fi, and a telephone for local calls. There are cell phone towers are near-by that support GCI and AT&T service-other mobile providers may not provide adequate service in the area. You will have the property to yourself. There are several places to admire the spectacular view and some short trails you can walk to the south. Please be aware that their residential properties on both sides. Occasionally a local cat, dog, free ranging chicken or even a small child belonging to the family that manages the property for us may be found wandering the property. Bald eagles and Great Horned Owls frequent the tall spruce trees, a fox has wandered the property for many years, raising kits in a den on the bluff. We live 500 miles away, but our neighbors (who lived in this house for 2 years) are on the 3 acres next door, and they will be your local hosts and deal with any issues or concerns. Leann will make sure your stay is all that you hope for, and we will be available by phone or email whenever needed. She is available to greet you and offer you some opportunities to experience the "local" culture and ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. Gakona was one of the original stops along the historic Valdez Trail. The Gakona Roadhouse is just down the road (also a great place to stay). Travelers used to dock in Valdez and make their way north to gold via dog sled in winter. Road houses were 15 to 20 miles apart and very few of them still exist. There is a rich history in the Copper Basin. Gakona lacks the glitz of some of the other road system tourist areas, but is rich with spectacular views, wonderful people, and many outdoor activities. There is no public transportation available. Renters would need to provide their own wheels. Glennallen is 15 miles away, where you will find, banks, grocery stores and gas stations. We have a 2 night minimum. Stay 6 nights and your 7th will be free! The base rate covers 2 adults, each additional person is $25 per night. If you need a third bed we can set up an air mattress. Ask about river raft trips, our friends own a fishing guiding and rafting business nearby. They are awesome! Valdez, Kennicott/McCarthy, and the Denali Highway are all possible day trips from the house. Wrangell St. Elias park of course, is our front yard. The visitor Center for the park is a 20 minute drive. Gakona has a historic lodge, restaurant and tavern, rafting, salmon fishing and flight seeing are all available within 5 miles of the house. A local brewery is also on the same bluff and is a walkable distance from the house. There is river rafting and king salmon fishing within minutes on the Gulkana and Klutina Rivers. Just down the road is the best restaurant in the Copper Basin, the historic Carriage House. You will be on the door step of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest park in the nation. We can hook you up with local deals and incredible flightseeing! The Copper Basin while still on the road system is in a remote part of the state. There are no movie theaters, night clubs or other urban types of entertainment available. Good restaurants are a lucky find and groceries and gas will be more expensive than in Fairbanks or Anchorage. Please keep these things in mind as you plan your trip to the area.
