IMPORTANT - MUST COME BY BOAT THE FIRST TIME! NOTE: Designed as a refuge from electro-magnetic pollution, without electricity or WiFi. Devices can be charged at the main house. Cozy and peaceful, lovely lakefront house with epic views of the surrounding volcanos and the lake. Spectacular sunrises, sunsets, stargazing, swim and paddle-board! Ecological property, off-grid, solar power, dry composting toilet and solar shower, pristine lake frontage, private beach and dock. The space Our ecological and permaculture-based property includes all of our listings, the Eco Cottage, the Eco Nest and the Cozy Eco Cabin, and is located in Pasajkap, approximately 1.5 KM from the villages of San Marcos la Laguna, and Tzunuaná, Lago Atitlan. Just a few steps from the lakeshore, with spectacular views of the lake and surrounding volcanos, our charming and tranquil land offers a highly unique and eco-friendly experience! By spectacular views we mean that, visible directly across the lake, the ancient landscape here encompasses the 3 dormant volcanos of Lake Atitlan: Volcan Toliman, Volcan Atitlan and Volcan San Pedro. Also visible in the distance (approx. 50 KM to the south-east) are two of the volcanos situated around Antigua: Volcan Acatenango and Volcan Fuego. Fuego is an active volcano and its frequent eruptions are visible day and night. The dark, puffy clouds of smoke are distinct from normal clouds and at night you can catch the fiery eruptions hurling glowing lava high into the sky and running in rivers down the slopes. The view of the lake itself is mesmerizing, captivating the senses, cultivating feelings of peace, tranquility and well being. Through terraced gardens and stone stairs you reach our houses, nested amongst avocado trees, flowing vines, dragon fruit cactus, papaya trees, edible and medicinal herbs & plants - a food forest following permaculture principles. Electricity is provided by our small solar system, designed only for illumination at night and charging phones/computers. There is no refrigeration available so all food brought in must be able to be stored at room temperature. Please charge devices only during peak sunlight hours, in order to minimize the strain on our system. There are two separate water systems: lake water, used for washing dishes, hands, and showering, is pumped by solar power to a tank located at the top of our property and distributed by gravity to the houses. The other system is rainwater catchment, for drinking, brushing teeth, and cooking, collected from the roofs and pumped to a different tank at the top of the property, also distributed by gravity to the houses. Our property uses only sawdust based dry composting toilets, to protect the precious lake waters from pollution and produce humanure for organic compost. The solar heated showers provide hot water during peak sunlight hours. This is a zero waste facility. We happily collect all organic waste, food scraps, etc., for chicken feed and to produce compost. Please place it in the provided plastic container, found in the kitchen. If you like, you can take it to the chicken coop or simply leave it by the door for the caretakers to collect, before 2pm each day. We ask that you take all non-organic waste out with you when you leave. All of the local villages have recycling programs where you can deposit your non-organic waste and we do not burn any trash or waste materials on our property. Guest access The property is best accessed by boat. Boats pass by every 20 minutes during day hours from Panajachel or from San Marcos. Private boat service is available upon request. Easy access to all of the nearby lakeside villages from our dock by boat. There is also a very rough foot path through the Tzan Kumibal reserve, where you may enjoy a fantastic but challenging hike with amazing views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes. This path from the road above the property is rugged, very steep and rocky, and unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues. We DO NOT recommend coming this way with luggage. Other things to note This is a very quiet and tranquil place to enjoy the solace of nature, bird watching, sunbathing and stargazing. Lovely! Our environmentally friendly endeavor is a model for a conscious, alternative and sustainable lifestyle. We offer experiential learning on sustainable living by design: - solar heated shower and electrical power - rainwater collection - dry composting toilets for humanure production, composting chicken coop, worm composting box - permaculture forest - local materials and methods of construction - charcoal and silver filtered rain water for drinking water - solar pump for lake water and natural filtration for gray water It’s a good idea to bring food with you for your first night and the following day, so that you may relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty before going out on adventures around the lake, shopping in San Marcos or to the health food store and markets in San Pedro. Candles are great for lighting at night in this electro-pollution free cabin. We provide some but you may wish to purchase more at any of the tiendas in the lakeside villages. 2 rolls of toilet paper are provided, any extra that may be needed during your stay can be purchased from one of the local tiendas in the nearby villages. We provide filtered rain water for drinking, clean sheets, warm covers, bath and kitchen towels. The kitchen has all you need for enjoying delicious, home cooked meals. You can stroll the garden, picking herbs and medicinal plants. Depending on the month of your visit you may enjoy jocote fruit and dragon fruit, nisperos (loquats), lemons, edible herbs and berries.
