Yurt in Schoharie
Description
Welcome to this handcrafted 21’ yurt by Canadian artisans at Yurta. It’s the only one in the Northeastern USA & it’s captivating & unparalleled. Get away from the routine, slow down, & connect with whatever matters most. Whether casual, artistic, or spiritual pursuits, you will find inspiration & peacefulness. NOTE: Read entire page so you know how to plan & pack accordingly. And make sure you understand the ‘house rules’ & ‘seasonal/off-grid amenity limitations’. Message w/ any questions. The space **Off-grid, 350 sqft. of interior with wrap around deck, fully surrounded by nature, tons of natural lighting, a dome and nine windows, minimally and thoughtfully furnished, cozy, inspirational, recharging, and healing. ********************************************* Guest access **My sister and brother-in-law live in a cabin elsewhere on this 5 acre property and I will be elsewhere here when not traveling. One of us will enter yurt during your stay if battery station needs charging or supplies need replenishing. (Yurt is off-grid). **Your rental space includes privacy — no neighbors in sight from yurt. You have access to the woods, the yurt and its wrap around deck, the back part of the field for games like corn hole, and parking on the gravel pad across from family’s cabin. **Depending on the time of year there are animal sounds or sightings like birds, woodpeckers, hawks, owls, chipmunks, turkey, deer, fox, and coyote. And you might hear rain/snow pattering or tree nuts periodically dropping on the roof. ********************************************* 1) Inside yurt, you have access to a kitchenette with fridge, two-burner propane stove, filtered drinking water, sink with non-potable water, and basic cooking utensils like cutlery and pot/pan. (Seasonal limitations apply, see “Other Things to Note” section below). ********************************************* 2) You have an indoor wood stove for colder temps. The equivalent of 4 slow-burning logs and a few fire-starters will be provided complementary. Anything beyond that is $3/log. This is the only wood that can be used with this particular stove. No outside wood permitted. **There is also a basic outdoor fire pit with a grate for BBQing — for this you can make use of fallen limbs here and some of our personal stash. But we request grabbing a bundle at Stewart’s shop down the road too. ********************************************* 3) There are 3 beds. A) Two foam air mattresses (you can put them together to arrange as 1 Full or keep them as 2 Singles). B) an extra long Twin futon that sits on a tatami mat. **There is also plenty of floor space with an available camping mat if that is preferred. Two full-size comforters, one twin comforter, and four pillows are provided. ********************************************* 4) There is an outhouse shower (with hot water) during the summer only. Depending on outside temperatures, it might also be available in the early fall and late spring, but this varies year to year. Liquid body soap and towels/washcloths are provided. Bring all other toiletries you need. There is a basic compost toilet year round with toilet paper provided. ********************************************* 5) Since the yurt is off-grid, you have access to a number of USB/battery-operated items like lanterns, fans, and a power station for charging your devices (both USB and AC plug capable). There are also cleaning items like a handheld vacuum or rug cleaner in case of a spill or mess. ********************************************* 6) There is no wifi, but there is internet access with great LTE or 5G signal using Verizon carrier. Guests have reported that other carriers have worked too, with some variance in signal. But most folks come and try to unplug anyhow. ********************************************* Other things to note ******************************* **AMENITY/SEASONAL LIMITATIONS**: 1) The yurt and outhouse are off-grid and you’re in the woods. Amenities are not conventional, and supplies need to be replenished by us during your stay if they run out. Think rustic and camping for remembering you’re in nature and not at home or a hotel, but get much more in convenience than you’d expect for the setting. See photos. ********************************************* 2) We have a steep gravel driveway. A 2 wheel drive vehicle is typically okay, but NOT when there is snow or ice. During wintry times, all-wheel-drive (AWD) or 4 wheel drive (4WD) is necessary. There is always the option to park at the base of driveway and walk up to yurt too. (Note: the latter will be requested when there is a snowstorm or when driveway is otherwise covered by too much ice/snow). ********************************************* 3) No refrigerator or sink and shower water available between November-April, and sometimes May and October if temps are still too cold. But filtered drinking water is provided year round. You can bring a cooler during these months if needed (or we can provide one with ice packs if requested). ********************************************* 4) A wood stove is the sole source of heat. The yurt has wool felt insulation to retain some heat in cooler temps. But it mirrors the outside temperature when these felt windows are not zipped and when no (or inadequate) heat source is being used. The stove needs to be continuously run to feel comfortable, if you rent in the colder months (typically November through April). So it’s best to know your comforts and preferences. **Outside of these months, the upstate New York temps are still on the cooler side and require occasional to moderate stove use. It’s mostly pleasant without a fan, but there are some hot yurt days too. **Note: In addition to what’s already here in rental, always bring a winter-rated sleeping bag(s) just in case. It’s best to have it on hand and not need it than to remain colder than you’d prefer. ********************************************* 5) Most or all windows are zipped and typically remain covered in colder months to retain stove heat. (And the live plants are sheltering elsewhere). So the interior look will change from the usual 360 degree view of open windows. See photos for an example of appearance. *********************************************
