Other things to note Cuba is an archipelago formed by more than 4,000 cays and islets, which in total reach an area of almost 110,000 km2, of which 107,466.92 km2 belong to the island of Cuba, which is elongated and narrow and its figure resembles that of an alligator. Precisely because it is located at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, it has been known since the time of the colony as “The Key to the Gulf”. The closest countries are Haiti, the United States, Jamaica and Mexico. Cuba is divided into 15 provinces and 168 municipalities, including the special municipality Isla de la Juventud., and its total population is just over 11 million inhabitants. Cuba is ranked 51st in the Human Development Index prepared by the United Nations, the fourth among Latin American countries, after Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. Its climate is warm, tropical, seasonally humid, with an average annual temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The averages in summer (May to October) are 27 degrees Celsius (with a slight increase in the eastern region), and in winter (November-April) of just 21 degrees. The coolest months: December, January and February, and the hottest: July and August. Relative humidity is high with averages near 90 percent. In the Cuban ecosystem, more than 32,000 species coexist with almost 43 percent of terrestrial endemism, which constitutes a resource of inestimable value for the country. In the fauna, mammals such as jutías, various bats, reptiles with a high population of crocodiles, amphibians (including the small frog of the world), fish and marine animals stand out. Insects and insectivorous mammals are also abundant. The flora is characterized by an extraordinary wealth of species and a considerable endemism, mainly in mountainous areas. Some 11,000 species are reported, of which 6,300 are endemic (just over 50%), and of these 4,500 are dicotyledonous. For the protection and preservation of its flora and fauna, Cuba has 14 national parks, 25 ecological reserves, 6 biosphere reserves (Guanahacabibes, Sierra del Rosario, Ciénaga de Zapata, Buenavista, Baconao and Cuchillas del Toa), as well as the cultural landscape of humanity (Viñales) and the Natural Heritage of humanity (Granma Landing). Language Spanish National Flower The Butterfly (Hedychium Coronarium Koenig). El Tocororo National Bird (Priotelus Temnurus). National Tree La Palma Real (Roystonea Regia). There are two types of currency, the Cuban Peso (CUP) and the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). The latter is used for transactions by tourists and in currency collection stores. In the tourist poles of Varadero and Jardines del Rey, the Euro is also used as a currency. The dollar is changed according to the official exchange rate of the day but the operation is penalized with 10%. It is possible to exchange convertible currencies in the Exchange Houses (CADECAS), Banks, hotels and airports, with virtually no variations in exchange rates. Religion Cuba is, as the wise Fernando Ortiz defined it, an ajiaco of nationalities and therefore several religions coexist. The distinctive feature of religious belief in Cuba is the mixing of multiple faiths and manifestations. This religious syncretism was formed mainly on the basis of the mixture of elements of the Catholic religion, brought by the conquerors and colonialists and those of the African religions, which brought with them slaves, to which elements of spiritualism were later incorporated. Although the state declares itself secular, there is a strong popular religiosity and also a high percentage of atheism. The main regions of tourism development according to the Ministry of Tourism are: Havana: Center of the political, economic, cultural and social life of the country. Here is the Historic Center of Old Havana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Varadero: Main spa of the country and considered its tourist capital. Nearby is the Great Zapata Peninsula Park. Jardines del Rey: The most promising of the Cuban tourist destinations extends in the north from Caibarién (Villa Clara) to Camagüey. It includes the cays Santa Maria, Coco and Guillermo. North of Camagüey: Here is the Santa Lucia beach. Northern coast of Holguin: It has beautiful beaches of Guardalavaca, Esmeralda and Pesquero. Santiago de Cuba: Historic and hospitable city, full of traditions, where the Baconao Park is. Central South Coast: It is defined by the destinations Cienfuegos and Trinidad, a city founded in 1515, declared a World Heritage Site. Los Canarreos: This is Cayo Largo del Sur. Cuba Airports has more than 20 airports, including 12 international ones, located in Havana, Varadero, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Holguín, Manzanillo, Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Cayo Largo del Sur and Cayo Coco. The public railway network crosses the country from east to west, however this type of public transport is not recommended, because it does not enjoy much efficiency due to the state of the tracks and the obsolescence of the equipment. There is an electric train, the only one of its kind dating back to 1924. The famous Hershey train with a peculiar history, runs daily from Havana to Matanzas, and has a special trip for tourists with the original wagons. Omnibus Cuba has another road transport network, which also links the main cities of the country. This transport is used interchangeably by Cubans and foreigners in the country. Nationals use the services of the National Omnibus Company, which charges in Cuban Pesos and the company Via Azul focused especially on the transport of tourists is paid in CUC. Both connect the different destinations of the Island with their own departures or intermediate stops, to Havana, Varadero, Trinidad, Santa Clara, Camagüey, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa and Viñales, in Pinar del Río, among other locations. Tourists who are going to use Via Azul to travel the island are recommended to take their tickets previously in Havana and thus plan all the sections without having to use their time to arrange a passage between one destination and another. Culture In Cuba you live and feel an intense cultural activity. During the year different festivals and fairs are held throughout the country that are of great attraction for visitors who wish to approach the Cuban language through music, dance, cinema and literature.
