The Penguin Hide-out guesthouse at Bettys Bay offers guests an unforgettable experience of sharing the guesthouse property with the famous African Jack-ass penguins from the Stoney Point colony of this coastal town. Adventurous guests at the Hide-out can now claim they have for once in their lives been living amongst penguins. The space The self-catering unit contains: One Bedroom with double bed Kitchenette with fridge, microwave, two plate stove and other basic amenities Bathroom with shower TV Free Wi-Fi Outside braai and shady wooden deck for a brunch or sundowners Safe on-site parking Safety alarm Guest access Access to the flat is clearly marked inside the property Other things to note Bettys Bay is a picturesque coastal village nestled between the Kogelberg mountain range and the Atlantic ocean 100km south east of Cape Town. Paying a visit to Bettys Bay can be for ample reasons: •for those visiting the village seeking tranquility and peace of mind, could experience exactly that and find themselves once again amongst the beauty of the unique fynbos landscape of the area, a UNESCO – declared Bioshere Reserve • for those keen on hiking, Hangklip summit or Kogelberg Nature reserve are very popular • mountain bikers can opt for the trails in the Nature reserve all along the stunning Palmiet river or the rugged gravel road from Rooi Els between the mountain and coastline • road cyclists on the other hand, could treat themselves with probably the most scenic coastal stretch of road in the Western Cape between Rooi Els and Gordons Bay • swimmers and surfers can enjoy the 2km long lily-white main beach with Koegelberg a perfect backdrop. • for those keen on heritage sites, the original site of the whaling station next to the penguin colony, is worth visiting • visitors exploring the wine culture of the Western Cape, will find the latest addition to the Cape Wine route map, namely that of Botrivier, 30km away, very exiting and fulfilling And then there are those visiting the coastal town for only one reason, namely to experience the world renown African Penguin colony at Stoney Point, the largest penguin colony in the country. For many years the colony was confined to a specific spot at Stoney Point, but started moving along the coast in an easternly direction. In the process pairs of penguins broke away from the colony and find shelter at some properties near the coast line, especially during breeding season. The Penguin Hide-out property is one of those sites close to the colony and coast line that accommodates a number of these birds for several years now. Watching our feathered friends trotting at sunset from the sea and roaming the guesthouse site to settle for the night, is quite fun. The Penguin Hide-out guesthouse is also at the doorstep of the national declared Whaling Station Heritage site where some remains of the old slipway and whale processing plant dating back to the nineteen thirties, are still intact. An information board at the site sets out the history of the operation of the whale processing industry those early years.
