Description
This high-end country escape for 1 or 2 people on Eastside - a Scottish hill farm - is within easy reach of Edinburgh. Award-winning, scandi-design architecture meets the historic farmyard to make a stunning space to relax in. A huge window frames the rugged heather hills and woodlands of the surrounding Pentland Hills Regional Park - ideal if you like the great outdoors. Explore Edinburgh (about 30mins drive), curl up with a book by the wood burning stove, or steam in our sauna yurt. The space Architecturally designed, the light & airy double-height space takes on a Scandinavian feel with restrained use of colour and simple materials. Light floods through the windows with beautifully crafted ash window seat and generous sheepskins. An open-plan space is thoughtfully divided through level changes, perforated screens and bespoke furniture. The open-plan kitchen and living room are separated from the rest of the space by a wooden ash screen. The living room is on the lower level - small but perfectly formed with wood burning stove and cosy window seat. The kitchen is on a slightly higher level up a folded steel staircase. A uniquely designed and handcrafted kitchen/ tv unit book case divides the space in two. Behind the ash screen is a cosy bed nook with the comfiest of double beds. Sink into crisp linen, woollen blankets and the softest pillows. Fall asleep in perfect comfort listening to the crackle of the stove and the wind in the trees. The bathroom has white marble tiles, a rain shower and other high-end fittings. The polished concrete floor has underfloor heating throughout. From the bedroom, a ladder leads upstairs to a hidden mezzanine with comfortable beanbags. Perfect for star-gazing or whiling away the day with a book from our curated collection. The cottage recently won the Edinburgh Architectural Association's award for "Regeneration & Strategy" and was nominated for "Best Small Project" award. Green energy is generated with our own wind turbine and hot water comes from our biomass boiler. The Cartshed really is the perfect rural escape. It feels wild, rural and a little off-grid - but is actually very comfortable and convenient! Being so quick to get to from Edinburgh and Edinburgh International Airport means that travelling and fuss is kept to a minimum and you can just get on with relaxing and unwinding in the most incredible surroundings! Guest access As a guest you have the private use of the whole barn and plentiful logs for your wood burning stove. The surrounding hills are yours to explore. Maps, flasks, tin mugs and rucksacks are provided to allow you to make the most of your surroundings. Hike from the doorstep or hire bikes a short drive away. The wood-fired sauna and plunge pool may be booked by guests on arrival for a small additional fee on a private-use basis. It will then be lit for you with sauna robes and towels provided. Note that the sauna is only open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays - although we reserve the right to alter the specific times and days available as necessary. Other things to note We are situated off the beaten track, hidden in a quiet glen in the Pentlands. Access to the cottage is up a 1 mile farm track. The track can be a little rough in places but shouldn't cause problems for ordinary cars. There is parking for one car provided with EV charger (30 seconds walk from cottage). Luggage + shopping may be unloaded outside the cottage. Additional parking can be arranged. As the cottage is 1 mile from the main road, we recommend the use of a car for the duration of your stay. We have a fibre internet connection with excellent wifi speeds. Inside, the accommodation is very quiet with thick stone walls and triple glazing. The accommodation is on Eastside Farm - an organic working hill sheep farm. The surrounding landscapes are managed by us within various agri-environment schemes to encourage bio-diversity. Power is generated via a wind-turbine and heating is provided via a bio-mass boiler using timber sustainably harvested on the farm. Guests will be invited for a small additional fee to book a private sauna session upon arrival. Instructions on booking are provided within the cottage. Sessions last up to 2 hours and take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays - although we reserve the right to alter the specific times and days available as necessary.
