Emmons House: Historic Oceanfront Home

A block from downtown, Sitka's Historic Emmons House offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and easy access to trails, shops, restaurants, and all water activities. Overlooking the downtown harbor, this spacious 3-bedroom oceanfront home provides the perfect stepping-off point for your Sitka adventures, with stunning sunrise-to-sunset views of forested islands, mountains topped with alpine meadows, eagles flying, and fishing boats entering and leaving the harbor. The space Located on the 2nd and 3rd floor, this 3-bedroom accommodation includes an open-plan living and dining area, large master suite with queen bed and full bath, separate bedroom with queen bed, and upstairs room with two twin beds. There is a day bed with trundle in the den/office that can be used to sleep two additional guests, although this room has connecting doors to the master bedroom, master bathroom and living room (see floor plan in photos for layout). A second bathroom with shower between the back bedroom and the kitchen provides easy access to all guests. The dining table seats 8 with bar seating at the kitchen counter accommodating 4 guests. The kitchen is fully equipped and a grocery store is just two blocks away. A side deck with BBQ grill offers an ideal place to enjoy the sun and scenery. History of Emmons House and George Thornton Emmons: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the original house was an American Four-Square house, a square boxy design similar to many built in Sitka during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Built in 1895 by Lieutenant George Thornton Emmons, this home was reputed as the place where important Sitka visitors such as John Muir dined. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Emmons rose to the rank of Lieutenant and became an ethnographic photographer, particularly interested in the Native cultures of Southeast Alaska. Some of his collected artifacts were purchased by the Museum of Natural History in New York City, and the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. His photographs are archived in the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. A book of his photographs and study of the Tlingit natives was published in 1991, titled The Tlingit Indians.
