Description
Strout Farm Cottage still belongs to the Strouts who have lived here for more than 180yrs. Starting with Richard Strout, there have been 7 generations of Strouts live in this cottage. Most of the furniture, photos and ornaments come with a story of where they fit in the Strout timeline. Additionally, there are more than 20 cellar doors within a 1.5km, including Leconfield, Wirra Wirra and Down The Rabbit Hole, this is the perfect location to explore the McLaren Vale wine region.. The space The cottage comprises of three bedrooms : 1 x Queen, 1 x Queen, 2 x King Single bunk bed (100kg max). All bedrooms have a view of the picturesque front garden and stunning sunsets. The kitchenette has limited capacity for cooking. There is a microwave and a Webber Q BBQ outside (equipped with pizza stone and convection rack/tack baking option, condiments and utensils). The McLaren Vale region has dozens of restaurants and take-away options that we would willingly recommend upon your arrival. There is one bathroom with a toilet, and a second adjoining toilet/basin to accommodate 6 people. This location is quiet, calm, safe and peaceful. Each evening presents a breathtaking sunset and you will be woken in the morning to the gorgeous sounds of birdlife that live in the surrounding trees. The cottage cellar is a beautiful place to eat meals or enjoy a glass of wine. We have a selection of wines from 6 local cellar doors available for purchase during your stay. Guest access There is plenty of parking. You will have access to most of the areas surrounding the cottage, including the lawns, the sheep paddock and the Moreton Bay fig tree. The cottage is divided into two dwellings. One is the Strout Farm Cottage the other is Andrew Strout's home. You will have sole access to the cottage, gardens, patio, cellar, pool table however the small adjoining dwelling is occupied by the caretaker, Andrew Strout. Andrew grew up on the farm and worked on the farm. If you have any questions about the history of the farm or if you have any concerns throughout your stay, Andrew will be your first point of call. There are 40 chickens that free-range in the late afternoon, however there is a fence that separates them from the cottage garden/lawns. In the late morning, or early evening you may see Granny Strout, Janet, feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs. Granny lives in the house to the south of the cottage. If you have any questions - she would welcome a chat with any guests new to Strout Farm. We do sell some Strout Farm produce such as fresh eggs, olive oil, various jams and seasonal fruits when they are available Other things to note Guests will be provided continental breakfast, including fresh bread and home made jam / cereal and fruit picked on Strout Farm. Tea and nespresso coffee also available. The cellar is a cool retreat in summer and has an open fireplace with a selection of blankets hand-knitted by Granny Strout for the winter months. The main living space also has reverse cycle air-conditioning and a fireplace. Note: the bedrooms do not have air conditioning. Each of the bedrooms have pedestal fans and ceramic heaters available and electric blankets for the winter. We do have wifi but it is serviced through a 4G dongal. The service does stream to the TV but the service can be affected by weather conditions. The cottage walls are thick, and some bedrooms have better access to the wifi signal than others. We are blessed to live on this land that has been handed down to us. We don’t see ourselves as the owners of Strout Farm; but as the caretakers. We ask that you help us by respecting this cottage so that it can be enjoyed by others for many more years to come. There is a printed document (which is constantly being updated) in the cellar that you can read and better understand the history of the Strouts and their farming of this land over the past 180 years. The document contains details of the pictures, furniture and ornaments on display in the cottage.
